The basic matching puzzle consists of a grid containing different colored rune stones. The rune stones need to be swapped with an adjacent rune to create a three or more row of matching runes. This match will then erase, letting the above rune stones fall down and new rune stones move into the top spaces.
The basic matching puzzle is made more complicated with the addition of colored squares on the grid in which a match needs to be made in order to un-color the square. There are also many helpful additions such as the hammer. This addition allows the player to break a tile that is preventing advancement.
More complications to the matching puzzles are the time limits, which can be lengthened by creating matches of five or more, and colored balls which need to be filled by creating matches of the coordinating colored rune stones. More traditional items are also here such as chained and double chained tiles, and boards that have holes which make matching more difficult.
Game play is littered with small messages from the guide Aiden, a druid elder. Aiden guides you through the match three puzzles, but he also introduces hidden object puzzles. Once each hidden object puzzle is finished, he congratulates you on finding another item that was needed by another Druid.
The hidden object section of Legend of the Golden Tome leaves a lot to be desired. The coloring of the pictures make it difficult to see the hidden objects. The hint button only makes a path of fairy dust to the item. You are still sometimes left to click where you see nothing.
The matching puzzles and the story are wonderful though. Each new addition to the puzzles keep them occupying and the story is interesting.
