Review of Levi's Low Skinny 531 Organic Cotton Jeans in Black Sheen

The Pen
After living in black leggings last summer, when the fall weather hit I decided that I had to have a pair of black jeans, even though this conflicted with the fear I'd had of black denim since the early '90s.

But black denim is not what it was back then, the cuts are much chicer and it doesn't have to look all faded and stonewashed like it did before. So I decided to find a pair of black skinny jeans and I went to my local Levi's store to see if they had any.

I wasn't sure if Levi's was going to have what I was looking for, but when I told the salesgirl what I was looking for she handed me a pair of Levi's Low Skinny 531 Organic Cotton Jeans in Black Sheen. When she handed me the jeans she gave me a hesitant look like, "this is the best I can do," because the black sheen wash is a pure black, there isn't any special treatment like fading or whiskering on these jeans.

But a pure black wash was exactly what I was looking for, so I took the jeans and tried them on. When I got into the fitting room I loved the fit of the organic Low Skinny 531 jeans as soon I got them on.It usually takes me awhile to decide whether I'll buy a pair of jeans but I loved these immediately. They have a low rise that sits a little bit below my belly button, but not bikini line low, so it just accentuated my hips without making my torso look awkwardly long as some super low rise jeans do.

The black sheen was inky black and has subtle gray stitching. I don't like gaudy jeans, so I liked that the Low Skinny 531 had a very subtle Levi's logo patch that is made out of black denim with gray lettering, instead of an over the top patch. The only other logo is a small gray Levi's tab with green lettering that lets you know that these jeans are made out of organic cotton and are part of the Levi's Eco collection.

I really like the Low Skinny so I bought the pair for $69.50. I felt these Levi's were worth every penny. Some organic and eco-friendly clothes can look frumpy but these are cool.

The website claims they flatter a lot of silhouettes and are comfy from the hip to the ankle and I think both statements are true. They flattered my curves and they are super comfortable. They are made of 99% organic cotton and 1% Lycra and the jeans feel like I'm wearing thick leggings, they feel warm and they hold their shape well while still feeling really soft.

I don't wear black that often so I didn't think that I'd wear the Levi Low Skinny 531's much, but I wear them at least once a week now. These jeans work with so many outfits and styles. I feel like Audrey Hepburn when I wear them with flats, like a rock star when I wear them with ankle boots, and super sexy when I wear them with heels.

They feel light and stretchy like you're not wearing much so I never mind throwing them on. And even though I thought these would fade when I washed them, they are still dark black and haven't faded whatsoever so they still look brand new.

My problem with the Low Skinny is the fact that I am thin, and the smallest size available for these jeans is a size 0. They fit well when I bought them and whenever they're freshly washed, but whenever I wear them for a few hours they loosen up a lot around my waist and hips which is why they are so comfortable, but I just wish I could have bought them in one size smaller because I don't like my jeans to get all saggy around my butt and waist.

And the only other problem I've experienced with these jeans is that they attract lint like a magnet. I don't know if it's because these jeans are made of the organic cotton or if it's the black sheen wash but for some reason the 531's attract whatever fibers are in the air so I always have to use a lint brush on them before I wear them.

In the End...

The Levi's Low Skinny 531 Organic Cotton jeans in the black sheen wash are awesome. They're reasonably priced, figure flattering, they look modern and chic, and they're eco-friendly. I love these jeans and I want another pair in white to wear this summer. I would totally recommend them, I give them 4.9 out of 5 stars.
