Review of Lifeway’s Organic Green Kefir: Kiwi Passion Fruit Flavor

While shopping the other day I decided to try out Lifeway's Organic Green Kefir. It caught my eye on the shelf because although I have tried lots of different flavors of Lifeway Kefir I had never seen this one in stores before. I just noticed that the front said "with Phytoboost" and that it was organic, and that the flavor was Kiwi Passion Fruit. It looked like it would taste good and be good for you. So I bought it.

When I got home, I read the back of the bottle as I poured a little of the kefir into a cup. A few of the Phytoboost ingredients stood out at me: wheat grass, alfalfa grass, spinach, broccoli, green kale, and green bell pepper. This got me a little apprehensive, but maybe I wouldn't be able to taste all those things? So I tried it. Well, it most certainly tasted "green", and I couldn't even taste any kiwi in it. It was sweet, but had kind of a powdery aftertaste to it. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars only because it must be very healthy….but the taste definitely makes it not that worth it for me.

My husband then tried a little. He hated it! His rating is just 1 out of 5 stars because he can't get past the taste to consider the health benefits it might have.

I then poured some for my 2 year old daughter, (who loves "yogurt juice", what we call kefir) and watched her anxiously as she tried her first sip. She loved it! She not only finished it but also asked for more. And every day since she asks me for some! She's the only one drinking it now. So her rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

Lifeway Organic Green Kefir has 80 mg of polyphenols, 4 g of fiber, 12 g of protein, and 120 mcg of folic acid per serving. There are also 10 different probiotics in it, in addition to their Phytoboost blend which contains many green foods. Lifeway Organic Green Kefir is also offered in another flavor, Pomegranate Acai Blueberry.

My final verdict is that I'd just rather get my green nutrients from vegetables themselves. I like and eat many of the things that are in Lifeway's organic Green Kefir, especially kale, broccoli, and spinach. However, I may just continue buying it for my daughter, who loves kefir and drinks it often. I might as well pick a very healthy, organic one for her. For myself, I think I'll stick to their blueberry and peach kefirs (my favorite flavors!)
