Green Tea - What's in it for You?

REFugate
Drinking green tea has become very popular in the U.S., however, the use of green tea dates back a couple thousand or so years when it was discovered by the Chinese Emperor Shen-Nung in 2737 B.C.

Black, Oolong, and Green tea are derived from a perennial shrub called Camellia Sinensis, but you may ask, if the source of these teas is the same plant, what makes green tea special? The method of preparation of the leaves is what makes a difference; instead of fermenting the leaves, the leaves used for green tea are not allowed to oxidize (ferment) and are steamed shortly after plucking them from the shrub, allowing the natural ingredients to remain intact. The fact that the leaves are left pretty much in their natural state may be the reason why green tea is thought to be more potent than other type of teas.

Drinking green tea is a recent phenomenon in the Western world and we are just now learning what the Chinese and Japanese have known for a very long time; that green tea is an effective remedy for various conditions, from headaches, to the prevention of dental caries, and other ailments!

Clinical Studies:

Two reputable medical organizations, the National Cancer Institute and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) have conducted various scientific studies, revealing that that green tea contains many important nutrients, such as:

~ Polyphenols: a powerful antioxidant known as epifgallocatechin gallate or (EGCG for short), and has been shown to have anticancer and antiviral properties.

~Proanthocyanidins and flavonoids catechins: powerful antioxidants which may inhibit the formation of cancer cells.

~And: proteins, chlorophyll, tannins, lignin, and theanine (an amino acid).

The studies show that catechins may help lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, help protect the body against free radical damage, and it may promote weight loss, due to the tea's thermogenic properties (green tea helps raise the body's metabolic rate and promotes fat oxidation)!

How much green tea should you drink to achieve the desired health benefits?

Among some of the claims reported in a separate article by the AJCN, green tea may assist the body burn calories and decrease body fat. The article also stated that in order to achieve desired results, a person must drink at least 10-cups of green tea, daily (one cup of green tea is said to have at least 100 mg of EGCG). Another publication called "Herbs for Health" magazine stated that a Japanese study revealed that men who drank ten cups of green tea per day stayed cancer-free for three years longer than those who drank less than three cups a day.

Seriously, drink 10-cups of green tea, a day?

Have you tried to drink 10-cups of tea a day? I have, and that means frequent trips to the WC, which is quite annoying, and it just doesn't seem practical! Over time, I tend to drink it less, and less, and finally, I get bored with the routine, and stop drinking it altogether! A few weeks, later, I start all over again.

Enter: Appied Nutrition's "Liquid Soft-Gel Green Tea Fat Burner"®

Thi product has certainly made my life a lot easier. One Soft-Gel contains three ingredients: Green Tea Extract (200mg), Natural Caffeine 160mg, and 160mg of a proprietary blend of various herbs (Yerba Mate, Bladderwrack powder, Cayenne powder, Eleuthero extract, Ginger root extract, GotuKola powder and licorice powder), to help support your system.

My personal experience with Liquid Soft-Gel Green Tea Fat Burner®

The morning after running a marathon, I got out of bed, every muscle in my body screaming! I followed my usual morning routine, one 8 oz. glass of warm water and two Applied Nutrition Green Tea soft-gels. On this particular day, my body ached so much that I thought about crawling back in bed, but I needed to go see the massage therapist. A couple of hours later I noticed I was moving around pretty well, and some of the stiffness had disappeared; I actually felt a bit better.

I mentioned to the therapist that I had taken 400mg EGCG (Green Tea), and clearly remember asking her... "Do you think the green tea has made my muscles feel better?" And, she replied that she had heard that green tea has many beneficial properties, so she was not surprised to hear my story!

Applied Nutrition's Suggested Use:

One or two soft-gels in the morning and one or two soft-gels in the afternoon with meals and a full glass of water.

That means, if you take four soft-gels a day, you'll ingest 800mg EGCG a day, or the equivalent of 8 cups of green tea! Taking the soft-gels is a lot easier to manage, and that's much better than drinking 10 cups of green tea a day! I still drink a cup or two of green tea every day, but then, it's a more pleasurable activity, rather than making myself drink it, which takes the joy out of it!

My thoughts about Liquid Soft-Gel Green Tea Fat Burner®

Although this product is marketed as a weight-loss aid, I'm not using this product for that purpose, as I don't believe there is one product on the market that's going to do that, in fact, it's a healthy life style that keeps me slender.

I use this product purely for convenience sake. It is a pleasant and easy way of taking in 800mg of EGCG every day, and benefit from the goodness of green tea. I'm happy that I'm still taking my green tea, just in a different form, and I find that I feel alert when using this product (it's the caffeine that gives me that little extra energy!)

Where to buy this product?

I buy it at Costco. A bottle containing 150 liquid soft-gels costs $13.95, and at four gels a day, I'm spending $0.40 cents a day on my health. One may think that's expensive, but I don't drink sodas, I don't snack (candy bars, chips, etc), so, to me the cost is minimal and worthwhile!

While preparing this review I discovered that on manufacturer's website, their product's Supplement Facts includes a fourth ingredient: 500mg of Chromium (chromium picolinate), and the formula sold at Costco doesn't contain Chromium! After a few emails to the manufacturer inquiring about the difference in ingredients, I was told that Costco requested that their formula not include Chromium. No other explanation was given.

If you are interested in this product and wish to have it with Chromium, I'd suggest you visit their website: Appliednutrition.com and see the vendor listing, or order it on-line. I've also seen the smaller, 30 pills containers at the local Walmart.

Recommend this product: I will say, yes, but be careful!

As with any product, natural, or synthetic, you need to ascertain that you can tolerate all of the ingredients contained in the product. Only you or your healthcare provider can determine if you can benefit from the ingredients of this product. I have not experienced any adverse reactions from this product, but then, I enjoy good health and I'm not taking any medications.

One soft-gel cap contains 200mg EGCG, that's the equivalent of drinking 2 cups of green tea! How much easier can it get?
