I guess these Kohl Eyeliners were inspired by the Egyptians who are famous for using kohl to line their eyes, because the sleek small vial that it comes in looks like a hieroglyphic or an Egyptian drawing to me. The vial has a fluid looking black lid that looks like a big needle of an eye. I think the packaging is kind of sexy and mysterious and it made me want to buy the eyeliner even more.
I don't know why L'Oreal named this shade Burgundy Kohl though, because it really didn't look that burgundy colored in the tube. It actually looks more like a plum shade with red tones but I figured it would look decent on me.
I tried on the H.I.P. eyeliner when I got home and it really doesn't look anything like burgundy on my skin either. It looks like a plum tone with copper and brown shimmer in it. When I applied it to my eyelids the color looked very similar to my brown eyes, but I liked the results because it still contrasted with my skin.
The L'Oreal H.I.P Kohl Eyeliner is actually a loose powder that's applied with a thin and pointy wand applicator. It's easy to work with and I realized that I could make really thin or thick lines effortlessly with it. I was also able to define my lower eyelids without having to stop and start again or having to pull back my eyelids.
I also loved that with this eyeliner I was able to make light, subtle lines if I wanted or darker deeper colored lines. So the Burgundy Kohl Eyeliner can go from looking like a soft shimmery coffee color to a deep plum shade depending on how much you use.
I found the Burgundy Kohl Eyeliner to be really versatile for these reasons. This is an eyeliner that I would definitely use during the day to subtly define my eyes, and then I'd also use a little bit more of it at night for a sexier look.
But the drawback to the L'Oreal H.I.P Kohl Eyeliner is the same thing that makes it so easy, the fact that it's a loose powder. The excess powder on this liner just flies all over your eyelids and cheeks, making them look bruised or dirty, so you have to make sure you blow most of the excess off the wand before you apply it, which makes putting on the liner more time consuming.
Another downside to the Kohl Eyeliner is that it smudges off really easily so most of it wears off after a few hours of wearing when your eyelids start to get oily.
In The End...
I do like the L'Oreal H.I.P. Kohl Eyeliner in Burgundy Kohl in general. It's so user-friendly and a lot of eyeliners - from pencils to liquid versions just aren't. It's also versatile, it can be used as a liner and an eye shadow since it is a powder. I also love the "Burgundy" color.
The smudging and wearing off is annoying, but that can be solved with a makeup primer. But the most annoying thing about this eyeliner is how the excess powder will fall on your cheeks, so if you can deal with wiping it off every time you use it then I'd recommend this H.I.P. liner. I still adore it despite its drawbacks. 4 out of 5 stars.
