Review of the Losers

A Lot of Stars and a Lot of Action

2010 is turning out to be a record blockbuster year as more movies have been released in the last 4 months than any year previously. The better thing is the fact that the public has been going out in almost record numbers. With that said, The Losers offer a high impact, comedic and entertaining film for males and females alike. Don't mis construed these words, no one never said the movie was great.

The Losers, stars Idris Elba (This Christmas, Obsessed, Daddy's Little Girls), Columbus Short (Stomp the Yard & Cadillac Records) Zoe Saldana (Drumline & Guess Who) Chris Evans (Street Kings & The Fantastic Four) Jeffery Dean Morgan (Ps, I Love You & Watchmen) and new comer Oscar Jaenada. The film is about 5 special trained soldiers who were sent into Bolivia on a special mission to destroy an enemy compound by an air strike. When the team caught a glimpse of 20 innocent children being bussed into the blast sight, Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his team rushed in to save the children before the missiles were dropped.

By doing so, they interfered with the plans of Max (Jason Patric), the villian, who organized a missile to hit the military helicopter that The Losers and the saved children occupied. Luckily for Clay and the other Losers, there was not enough room on the helicopter for the children and the Losers, causing the missile to only kill the 20 innocent children. Fearing that they would be blacklisted by the military for the death of the 20 children and not following orders, the Losers faked their deaths and laid low in a South American Village performing odd jobs, cock fight betting and drinking. That is until Asiha (Zoe Saldana) comes on to Clay in a bar. After a heated fight in a tiny motel room, Asiha offers the Losers a shot to clear their names by capturing the man who killed the 20 innocent children.

After that, one could pretty much predict the rest of the movie as nothing in Hollywood is original or unpredictable anymore. Zoe Saldana's character Asiha was only in the movie for the men whom wanted to see a young woman kick the ass of Jeffery Dean Morgan and dodge a barrage of bullets all the while dressed in a sexy black laced bra and boy shorts. The acting in the film was pretty decent as the majority of characters contributed witty and amusing aspects to the film. Columbus Short played a silerious (silly + serious) solider whom had the capability to drive or fly almost anything. Chris Evans brought his boyish charm and a zany feel to the film especially his elevator scene when he attempted to change clothes but was caught with his pants down in front of a group of boarding women. Instead of being embarrassed he asked, "Enjoying the angle of the dangle?" A little oh his Johnny Storm character surfaced during some parts of the film.

Idris Elba and Jason Patric played surprisingly different roles. Jason Patric wasn't your average sadistic villain. He was actually sadistic, cold, cool and quite humorous. All the while Idris Elba was an aggressive knife handler who threaten to cut the heads off of Ashia and Clay more than once during the film. As far as Zoe Saldana and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character, well.....they tried their best. Saldana was only there for eye candy and Jeffrey Dean Morgan was....just there.

Overall, the movie succeeded on delivering an action filled, enjoyable hilarious film that you may want to see again. However, where the movie failed was in the area of having a strong story line. The plot was weak at best, the climax failed to materialize and the ending was a very poor attempt at karma and irony. It can be thought that instead of making great movies, Hollywood is now seeking to make decent movies, movies that will make an immense amount of money-fast at the expense of cinematography, writing and the art of acting. Although Hollywood is putting out dozens of movies a month, the overall quality of them are poor. It seems that a new trend has developed and that trend is to put a lot of known faces in a film, add some action and sex and sit back as the dollars role in. Who is the blame for this? Hollywood or movie goers?
