This episode focuses on Sayid with Sawyer playing a large role in the storyline. Members of the Dharma initiative think that Sayid is an other and want to kill him to protect their own people. Sawyer posing as Le Fleur has to go along with this to preserve his secret and safety but feels immense guilt over doing so. He offers to let Sayid go but Sayid refuses and says he has a purpose on the island.
Young Ben is seen in this episode. He brings Sayid a sandwich and is beaten by his father for doing so. The audience feels a bit of sympathy for young Ben. Flashbacks in this episode show Sayid doing Ben's bidding as he kills a the final member on the list. There is a moment when Sayid asks Ben what he is supposed to do and Ben tells him to move on with his life and he walks away. As usual it is hard to tell if Ben is truly evil or if he is working toward a greater good. Viewers meeting young Ben see a different personality than current Ben.
During this episode a burning bus appears out of no where and crashes into one of the Dharma houses. Where did this bus come from? Who set it on fire and why did he want to hurt members of the Dharma initiative?
The episode ends with young Ben telling Sayid he will sneak him out of his cell if he will take him to the others. Young Ben tells Sayid he hates living with the Dharma initiative. Sayid appears to agree and he and Ben wander into the jungle. As they are escaping Jin catches up with them. Sayid knocks him out, steals his gun, and shoots Ben the child in the chest. Ben falls face first to the ground.
This episode leaves viewers with many questions. Is Ben dead? Can young Ben die? Daniel Faraday states that the past cannot be changed and what happens happens. Does this mean that Ben cannot be killed? Viewers were yet again left with the questions that makes Lost so unique and keeps fans watching every week.
