Well the answer to the second question could be as easy at the plane they found was simply miss-identified. To me that seems unrealistic in this day in age but it could explain the problems of the wrong pilot and being under water. Did you catch the backgrounds of the copter crew? I think they lend a clue as to what's going on. I didn't say that I solved the puzzle, just that I find this to be an interesting clue. We met Naomi previously and she remains a mysterious figure who's dead now.
Daniel Faraday is a physicist from Massachusetts. Charlotte Lewis is an anthropologist with some connection or knowledge of with theDharma Initiative. Frank Lapidus is a pilot and apparently some sort of tour operator in the Bahamas on the island of Eleuthera. Then Miles Straume is apparently a psychic-medium from California.
In this episode there is a flashback where Naomi asks Matthew Abbadon why he selected such an unqualified crew? Just knowing that he's involved let's us know that there is something potentially evil afoot. A little side note here;Abbadon is a name that comes from Revelation 9:11 (freaky? coincidence?) where he is the "Angel of Death".
Why bring a physicist? What can he contribute? Bring a Rambo type maybe. Bring a Native American tracker maybe. There are a lot of more useful people you could bring along than a physicist; in this particular situation. Maybe that's a clue here? ABC has a message board where people can discuss various theories about the overall plot.
They range from someone just tossing something out to some that are very well thought out. On November 2nd of last year someone purposed a theory that this island emitted a electromagnetic field that played a role in getting the island trapped in some sort of space-time distortion. The posting is called, "Casimir Effect Easter Egg." I would venture that having a physicist on this mission would be a very good indication that this theory is at least pointed in the right direction. As always every answer only seems to add to the complexity of the plot. That's why is show is so successful and that's why I enjoyed this episode so much.
