Review: LUSH Honey, I Washed the Kids! Soap

K. F. Lynn
As someone who has followed Lush cosmetics for a while, I have seen people praising one of their most popular soaps, "Honey, I washed the kids!" time and time again. I had been itching to smell it every time I stepped into a Lush store, but every time I found myself whisked away by an eager clerk to see other products and it would always completely slip my mind. But I was thrilled when for Christmas, I received a Lush gift-box containing the soap that had alluded me for so long - Honey, I washed the kids!

Sure enough, when I opened the packaging it smelled exactly the way that it is described by the company: a delicious combination of honey and toffee. The soap itself is a light caramel brown, as Lush's products are all natural and the color reflects its main ingredient - honey water.

I'll be honest; when I first began using it, I could not quite wrap my head around why it was so amazingly popular. Sure, it smelled nice, but my first impression was rather mild. But then, this soap started to grow on me, and it grew on me like crazy - I absolutely fell in love and used it every chance I got. It is rather pliable because of its high honey content, so it is easy to break up and slice if you have to. For example, I cut off a hunk and took it with me on my New Years vacation and kept the rest stored safely at home.

As far as lathering, it does not do much which I know can be a major selling point. Lush fans will know that many of their soaps don't lather much, but they clean just as well as lathering soaps. If you use enough of the soap on a bath pouf or washcloth you can get a lather out of it, but do not expect a ton of bubbles if you rub the bar directly on your skin or into your hands first. I use a combination of my hands and my washcloth for this soap in the shower, and I find that this works best for me. However, it cleans just as well as any other soap, and the smell stays on your skin and hands for a good while after you use it! I have also noticed that it doesn't dry out my skin, which I'm assuming is credited to the aloe content. I still use lotion after showering with this soap just to be on the safe side, but it leaves my skin feeling smooth and soft after every shower.

One negative about this soap is that, once again, because of what it is made out of, it has the tendency to melt. And what happens when this melts? It becomes a drippy, sticky mess! Sure the mess smells great, but it is a waste of money and is a huge pain to clean.

I'm glad that I kept using this soap because I became absolutely hooked on it. I buy this for everyone that I know now and have gotten others hooked, too! If you are a fan of sweet scents but don't want something overpowering, stop into your nearest Lush store or jump on their website and order a huge 3.5 oz bar of Honey, I washed the kids! For about $8. You will not be disappointed - I certainly wasn't!
