Review: Maiden Alley Cinema in Paducah, Kentucky

Maiden Alley Cinema is an independent theater in Paducah, Kentucky, that is operated by The Paducah Film Society, a non-profit organization of individuals with a passion for movies. It's located in Paducah's beautifully renovated historic downtown, and provides the area with an outlet for a variety of non-mainstream films, from modern independent movies to vintage classics.

In addition to showing a new film every weekend, Maiden Alley also occasionally offers programs like "Chick Flicks," "Guys' Night Out," and "Movies for Me," a children's film series. They're also behind the annual four-day River's Edge International Film Festival, a festival that brings the best in independent cinema to Paducah.

While I'm aware of the budget constraints, my biggest criticism of this theater is the fact that it only shows one or two films at a time, and only operates consistently from Thursday through Sunday. It would be nice if it was available sometime during the week, but I understand that's not when most people are going to the movies, so having it opening during the week may not be worth it.

Before heading out to Maiden Alley Cinema, I suggest that visitors first visit their website. I've occasionally made the mistake of assuming they'd have something I'd like playing (because they usually do), but later discovering the film they've chosen wasn't something I'd be interested in seeing. The website clearly shows what's playing, what time it's playing, a description of the film, and a link to the film's trailer. That way, you can be sure if the movie is worth the trip and money.

Other than that, I consider a visit Maiden Alley Cinema a very satisfying experience. I especially enjoy the classic films, but I love many of their foreign picks, and I'm looking forward to their showing of The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

The cinema is comfortable, and there's an art gallery on site with free admission. The prices aren't bad either, but I get in for $4.25 with a student discount. Non-discounted adults have to pay $5.25 before 5 pm and $7.25 after. Seniors get in for $5.25 and children for $4.25 at all times. All prices listed are as of November 18, 2010.

I'd definitely recommend a visit to Maiden Alley Cinema to a friend. It can be the perfect conclusion to a romantic dinner in downtown Paducah, or just good fun for friends on a night out. All-in-all, I love the place!
