Review of Market Pantry Complete Pancake and Waffle Mix

Brad Kamer
Every Sunday breakfast in my home typically involves a main course of either omelet's or pancakes. If time is on my side, I will go the extra mile and prepare pancakes from scratch as there is no comparison. However, most Sundays there is no time to prepare this breakfast treat via the long route, so I usually go with a complete pancake mix, where only water is needed to be added to the store bought mix. I am not too picky about pancake mixes, though I try to stick to the well known brands such as Krusteaz and Aunt Jemima. Upon our last trip to Target, we wandered into the food aisle as we were low on pancake mix, and noticed the store carried the Market Pantry Complete Pancake and Waffle Mix next to the other more established brands. Our household has generally received good results from other Market Pantry products so I thought I should give this pancake mix a try.

Preparation

The wonderful thing about complete mixes is that they are 99% done and only water is needed. A tiny amount of oil will also be required for the griddle. The preparation instructions for making pancakes are all based on whether purchaser wants to make one cup, two cup, or three cups of mix. There is a little chart in the back of the box that explains the approximate serving sizes yielded for each cup of mix. Below the pancake yield box, are the instructions for preparing waffles with this mix. The instructions could not be any easier to follow. I prepared the mix based on 3 cups which yielded about twenty five pancakes. As I pulled them off the griddle, I simply placed them on plate and covered with aluminum foil to keep warm until I finished the whole batch.

Taste

The finishing appearance of these small pancakes exceeded my expectations. The pancakes were a pretty golden brown much resembling the pancakes one would get served at a McDonalds. The pancakes were fluffy and tasty. I would not consider the taste any better or worse than some of the competition such as Aunt Jemima and Krusteaz. The taste was par for the course when it comes to a complete pancake mix.

Price

I was able to purchase this thirty two ounce box of Market Pantry Complete Pancake mix for $1.79 (less tax). The name brands ranged about ten to thirty cents higher. I think this is a good buy for a complete pancake mix that stands toe to toe with the competition. I would say if I am in a shopping mood for a pancake that will produce a crispier edged pancake, I will go with Krusteaz.

Overall Satisfaction

Ease of preparation, price, and taste for Market Pantry Complete Pancake mix were all satisfactory. If I am low on pancake mix and I happen to be shopping at Target, I will most likely reach for this product again as it prices below the competition. When shopping at my regular grocery store I will continue to run with Krusteaz or the other brands depending on which one is on sale.
