Review: Master Guest House in New Delhi, India

Heather Carreiro
Most travelers passing through Delhi opt to stay in trendy Connaught Place or the backpackers' haven at Pahar Ganj. While these areas may be convenient and centrally located, most places you'll find are far from romantic. Aside from that, light sleepers may end up spending their time in Delhi in a zombie state due to the inability to escape the din of Delhi's busy streets. If you want to stay in a place where you can relax, enjoy peace and quiet, eat wonderful home cooked food, and sleep in a beautiful bedroom, Master Guest House is the choice for you.

Service

Master Guest House is run by a couple, Avnish and Ushi, who will always greet you with a smile. If you want to enjoy an insider's tour of the Old City, Avnish is your man. He arranges tours for small groups to Old Delhi, but make sure you book ahead as they don't happen every day of the week. This couple is extremely hospitable and possesses a wealth of knowledge when it comes to planning travel in India. They keep copies of all the latest guide books in their office, and you can count on Avnish to give you expert travel advice.

Rooms

Certainly one of the best features of Master Guest House is the exquisitely decorated bedrooms. Much like a romantic bed and breakfast, each of the five rooms has its own unique theme and style. The rooms come in different sizes, and the prices generally reflect the size of the room. Two rooms are located on the upper story, which has a lovely veranda and comfortable wicker furniture. Two communal bathrooms are shared by guests, but as they are kept impeccably clean this doesn't take away from the place's charm.

Location

The guesthouse is located in New Rajendra Nagar, which is a quiet suburb west of Connaught Place. The nearest major road is Shankar Road. There are not any attractions within walking distance, but you can easily find auto-rickshaws and bicycle rickshaws to take you where to need to go.

Food

You can enjoy Ushi's home cooked vegetarian cuisine around the dining room table. Order ahead for lunch or dinner and enjoy a meal with the family as well as the other guests. Since Master Guest House is located in a suburb, eating in can be convenient and relaxing if you don't want to travel to another part of the city for a meal.

All in all, if you want to retreat from the chaos of Delhi when you retire for the night, Master Guest House is the place for you. There are many other midrange hotels and guesthouses in the city, but their prices have soared up and over 4000 rupees a night. Aside from that, you won't beat the service and attention to detail that you'll get at Ushi and Avnish's welcoming guesthouse.

Ideal for couples, as all rooms are furnished with double beds. Book well in advance because this popular place fills up fast!

Also, I have not stayed in or reviewed Yatri House or Bajaj House, so when you write "you" and "your guide" I'm guessing you are talking to Lonely Planet and not Associated Content writers.

Hi Ben. Associated Content is not party of Lonely Planet. Reviews published here, like this one, are independent. If you read my review, you would see that it is extremely complementary of Master Guest House and that I agree with you! I don't have the 2009 LP, but the previous edition had a glowing review of Master Guest House, which is how I found out about it.

I can't understand how the Master Guest House in Delhi is being defined as "overpriced" in the 2009 Lonely Planet Guide. The rooms there range from 1500 to 2800 rupees, the food is excellent (try their unforgettable herbal lassi and caramel custard) and reasonably priced, and the quality of the service is way higher than the Yatri House or Bajaj House that you praise in the guide and which offer less than basic comfort and cleanliness.
I now have serious doubts about the fairness and reliability of your guide, as have tried many places in Delhi (I go there twice a year for my work) and I have not found any better place to stay than Master. The value there (in terms of cleanliness, facilities) is definitely better than other guesthouses and their price not higher.
So I honestly think this place deserves a better review than the one published in your guide...
