Review of Max Payne

Jeffrey Moss
I recently got the video game "Max Payne" for Playstation 2. It's similar to The Matrix with the bullet-time speed and the long jumps. There are some parts that are almost like the TV show "The Sopranos" but not entirely like it. At one part, Max's DEA contact, Alex, is gunned down in a New York subway station by the crew of Jack Lupino. When Max witnesses the murder, he is named the key suspect in the case by the chief of police, Jim Brovura.

Max becomes a one man army bent on bringing down the Puncharello crime family and avenging the deaths of his wife and baby daughter. Max has to live with the painful memories through every single level as he unveils new evidence in the case against Lupino and his men. Max finally manages to get to Cognitti, Lupino's right hand man. After chasing him over rooftops, Max finally hunts him down and kills him.

Following that chain of events, Max ends up at a nightclub called the Ragna Rock, where a drug smuggling ring is hidden. Max ends up having to fight the mobsters that are hiding there and try to end the drug smuggling. I'm still stuck in that level so I don't know what happens after that yet.

All in all, Max Payne is a pretty cool game that I enjoy playing any chance that I get. Once I beat it, I hope to get Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne so that I can review it at some point as well. From what I've heard, Max meets a tragic end once the second game is beaten. I will have to find out for my self if that is true or if it is just made up.

I would recommend Max Payne for anyone 18 years of age or older. This game has non-stop action and mild language that might be too intense for anyone younger than the age of 18. Of course, most games of this genre are made for a mature audience so it doesn't come as too much of a surprise to me. I look forward to playing Max Payne 2 and I hope to beat the Max Payne soon. I have gotten all the way up to level 8 of part 1 and I hope to get through the entire first part of the game and make it to part 2. Once I begin playing Max Payne 2, I will post a review on it as well.
