Review: McDonald's Monopoly Game 2009

When the leaves begin to change and it starts to get near Halloween, I know that my favorite time of year has arrived: Monopoly season. Every year, McDonald's has its most popular game, the Monopoly game, where you collect game pieces ( properties) to hopefully win prizes. However there have been some major changes to this year's game that I would like to make aware.

First of all, the playing time is shorter. The game used to go for a couple months and now the game is a little over one month. This means you have to cram your Big Mac visits to get the pieces. Or send in letters for requests for pieces like I did. Makes you look forward to getting the mail that maybe, hopefully, they will be kind and mail you that coveted Boardwalk piece.

Second, the game has gotten more complicated. The pieces now have codes where you can enter online and collect a different set of game pieces hoping to win money. Last year I won $50 cash ( which I had to fight for, but that's a different story). You can enter 10 codes a day max for the duration of the game. It seemed that every day I would get at least 25 coke points last year. Occasionally it would be a free hour of WiFi. One person would win $100,000 a day online. This year, I am blessed if I get 25 Coke points every couple days. This year, one person a day wins $10,000 with the chance to win more money if you roll a 12 on Jay Leno show.

Wait what? The Jay Leno show? This game used to be about collecting pieces. Then it branches to online play which I didn't mind. But now I have to watch tv too? This is getting too complicated. On top of the fact that the pieces are on more expensive items, larger items, items a small girl shouldn't eat nor want. I want more pieces not more pounds. Even the game board doesn't even look like the traditional Monopoly board in past years.

To me, it appears that McDonalds has gotten cheap with their most precious advertisement. Their game costs more and they are giving away less. Less prizes but you need to buy more expensive food to get the pieces.

McDonald, can't you afford to not skimp on your best feature? I know this is a tough economy, but with a corporate giant like you, can't you toss us a little bone here?
