I just recently heard a rumor that the Mellow Mushroom in Murfreesboro, Tennessee had gluten free pizzas. You know I had to check that rumor out, especially since the restaurant is only three miles from my house. I have been driving to Franklin. Tennessee when I wanted to eat out, which is a 35 mile drive one way. I really wanted with all my might for the rumor to be true. I've past by the Mellow Mushroom many times, it is located in a strip mall near my bank; I assumed it was a small hole in the wall type place. I couldn't have been more wrong; the place is huge, well lit and clean. It turns out that Mellow Mushroom is a chain of restaurants that started in Atlanta, Georgia in 1974 by three college students; each individual store is locally owned and operated.
I did a reconnaissance at Mellow Mushroom before the actual day I planned on eating there with my godson and his mother. I wanted to see if the rumor was true and double check out how the gluten pizzas were created and baked if it was true. I'm happy to report they kept the gluten and the gluten free pizza ingredients separate and they have gluten free areas for creating and baking. I am so grateful for that. I loved the atmosphere; it has 1970's vive going on with colorful paintings on the wall, the painted bus in the corner that you can reserve for parties and the colorful mushroom over the hostess' area. Since I became a teenager in the 1970s I felt right at home. I was given a copy of the to-go menu and I was impressed with the various types of gourmet pizzas that were offered. I saw many other items on the Mellow Mushroom menu that interested me, but my interested faded quickly when I was told that only the pizzas were gluten free.
My godson and his mother had a regular pizza, the House Special, while I had a gluten free cheese pizza. I shouldn't eat dairy, but I was too excited about have a place so near my house that sold gluten free food that I just did it anyway. The pizza was excellent, the crust was extremely thin compared to my friends' pizza, but I am certain the taste was just as good or better than their pizza. The pizzas smelt amazing and both looked wonderful. I told my 10 year old godson that I would be writing a review and what would he want to me to say about this place. He had two comments "their pizzas are hand flipped by pros" and the pizza was "good."
I made two trips, well three if you count the trip I took to see how it is all prepared, to Mellow Mushroom; twice without my wheelchair and once with my wheelchair. I wanted to see if there was a difference in service. In case you are interested the third trip to Mellow Mushroom was with my cousin when I went with my wheelchair. We were seated immediately; however the hostess tried to put us in a booth. I took one look at the booth then at my wheelchair and told her this isn't going to work. I don't want to stick out in the middle of the floor, plus it would have been just goofy for my cousin to sit at the booth while I was rolled up to the table as though I were in a highchair. The hostess had no problem putting us at a table; perhaps she had never encountered someone with a wheelchair and didn't think it though. I did notice that there are areas in the restaurant that have a step up or down so anyone in a wheelchair wouldn't have access to those areas, but the main area is accessible.
The first time I order a pizza I got a cheese pizza because frankly I was overwhelmed by the choices so I went for the simplest choice. The second time I ordered I asked for a pepperoni pizza. Yes, another simple choice, I know. Next time I will be daring and order the Hawaii pizza or the House Special pizza. My cousin didn't order one of the pizzas listed, instead she built her own pizza from ingredients she choose. By the way, my cousin told me that Mellow Mushroom had dairy free cheese, which I was extremely happy to hear about. It is a soy cheese called Daiya. Let me tell you this soy cheese tasted like the real cheese without out the side effects that normally manifest themselves within 24 hours. I really like this place; I can spend time with my friends and family and have a gluten free, dairy free pizza that is just delicious.
On the menu there is a green tab stuck to it that explains the option of gluten free pizza, but there isn't any indication on the menu or the website about the dairy free choice. You just have to be in the know. All the pizzas I and my companions had at Mellow Mushroom were awesome. The atmosphere is friendly and it is just fun to look at the colorful paintings, other colorful items in the place and you can watch them work the pizza dough. I highly recommend The Mellow Mushroom in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Great review, Genie. I have a sister who used to live in Fairfield Glade, TN and now she lives in Seymour, TN. I think that's near Murfreesboro. Anyway, your article was enjoyable to read.

I miss going through Murfeesboro on my way home to Oklahoma. Great review.
Sounds good. Be brave and experiment with your toppings - you might be surprised as to how good some of the more unusual combinations are :)
