One of the many home improvement store stops for me includes the Menards store located at 300 North Randall Road in Batavia, Illinois. If I am not visiting this location just about every week, I am going out to the Lowes in St. Charles, or Home Depot in Geneva. The Menards location is probably the most frequented visit for my home and yard improvement needs. The store is ahead of the home improvement pack when it comes to competitive pricing as well as touting several products made in the U.S. When shopping Menards in Batavia, one needs to consider such features as product selection, customer service, and parking when evaluating overall satisfaction of a quality hardware center
Product Selection
The Menards home improvement store in Batavia is quite large and offers just about anything a home or yard improvement junkie could possibly demand. If row upon rows of tools and hardware are not enough, the store has a large selection of treated and untreated lumber located outside behind the warehouse. Access to the outside lumber yard requires checking in and out at the drive up gate. There is also plenty of lumber located inside the store which is quite convenient when shopping in the winter or in adverse weather. The store also has the typical departments found in most "big box" hardware centers such as lighting, appliance, cabinetry, paint, lighting, electrical, and plumbing. Menards even sets itself ahead of the competition by even featuring a small grocery items section which includes beverages, snacks, and several cold items.
The recently added garden center located just outside the south end of the store is very large and has just about any landscape item a homeowner could possibly need. The center is opened very early in the spring and includes large garden carts for those trips that require bulky items such as garden mulch or pavers. The selection of plants, trees, and vegetation is quite extensive with really great pricing to match.
Customer Service
The service received at this location can be decent and poor depending upon the department. Overall, service has been satisfactory at best at Menards in Batavia. The garden center staff is probably the most accommodating as they are usually quite cheerful and helpful as the make the checkout process fairly quick. I also appreciate the occasional offer from the checkout clerks to assist me with my large cart loads to my vehicle.
The customer service from staff within the store is mixed. The paint department is lacking of any service with a smile and very unhelpful when it comes to requesting specialty ordered products. I recently took on a kitchen renovation project that required a metal backsplash. As I was directed to the paint department for this type of request, the paint department manager did no better than instruct me to check the web in a very gruff demeanor.
The recently revised Menards warehouse store included changing up the checkout lines located at the west side of the store. These new checkout lines are still attended by cashiers but the customer is now responsible for bagging and carting their own merchandise. I am not huge on this new process as I am already committed to this process at my grocery store and don't really want to have to deal with this on my hardware purchasing. The process does not get any better given the fact that most of these checkout lines are operated by moody teenagers that seem to have very little patience for fellow customers taking their time getting their products bagged to move the process along. I would think Menards should still employ a roving staff member to assist those customers that are slow in the process of getting their items packed up and moved along.
Parking
The parking at Menards in Batavia is satisfactory at best. The days of good weather means one will generally find a decent parking space. The staff is generally good at shagging rogue carts back to the cart corral to prevent clogged parking spaces and obstructed lanes. The downside to this lot is the effect of s of inclement weather. It does not take more than a strong rain storm for this parking lot to flood. I can recall more than four or five occurrences in the past three years for which parking spaces were tough to find due to a third of the lot being flooded.
Overall
Generally, the visits and purchase decisions at Menards in Batavia are positive. I always get the feeling I am getting a decent return on my money and like the large selection of items offered up at this location. While I will still visit competitors down the street for simple hardware and paint needs, I prefer this store for purchasing lumber and garden center products.
