Review: Minute Maid Enhanced Pomegranate Blueberry

Drew Bush
I started drinking Enhanced Minute Maid Pomegranate Blueberry Juice with added Omega-3 about a year ago. It is said that the juice is supposed to nourish your brain. As a matter of fact, it says "Nourish Your Brain" on the front of the bottle. Do I feel any smarter? Well, I can't say I do. However, that does not mean that this juice has no benefits.

First, I will describe the taste of the juice. The flavor of the juice is pomegranate blueberry. According to the ingredients label, there is a mixture of apple, blueberry, pomegranate, and raspberry juices (all from concentrate). I must say that they taste good mixed all together. Unlike some of the juices which have only 10% or 5% real fruit juice, this is a 100% fruit juice blend. The juice is really fresh tasting and the tartness of the fruit really comes out. Yummy!

So what are the health benefits that come from drinking this juice? Well, according to the nutrition facts label, a serving size of 8 fluid ounces contains 100% Vitamin C, 20% Vitamin E, and 10% Vitamin B12. In addition, there is no corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup in this juice. Most of the sugar that is in the drink is natural sugar from the mixed fruit juices. Another benefit of drinking this juice is that it provides 55 mg of Choline per serving and it is a great source of Omega-3/DHA. According to the label on the bottle, the juice contains 50 mg of DHA per serving. This is equivalent to 31% of the 160 mg that is recommended per day.

So what is the significance of choline, DHA, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C? According to the label on the bottle and Minute Maid.com:

"DHA is a key building block in the brain."

"Choline and Vitamin B12 play a role in brain and nervous system signals."

"Anitoxidant Vitamin E may help shield the Omega-3s in the brain from free radicals."

"Vitamin C is highly concentrated in brain nerve endings."

So, from these scientific studies that were done, it appears that the ingredients in this juice help support brain health. If you were hoping to become Einstein just by drinking this juice, well, that is not a promise I can keep. Even though I will not be as smart as Einstein anytime soon, I feel good knowing that I am drinking a juice that may help keep my brain highly functional for at least a few more years (ha ha).

The juice can be purchased from most supermarkets. I usually get mine from Wal-Mart because the juice can be a little on the pricy side. For a 59 oz. bottle, it runs at about $3 at Wal-Mart and $4 at the local supermarkets (unless there is a sale).

Storage Tips:

Store in temperatures ranging between 33 and 40 degrees.

Consume the juice in 7-10 days.
