After many years of not being able to figure out why my hair was too oily from hair oil or drying out too quickly resulting in excessive dandruff even though I oiled it regularly, I learned that petrolatum and mineral oils are the main problem in black hair oil products.
Although the hair oil sits on our hair and makes it shiny, it's not useful for oiling the scalp. After receiving a promo package from M&M Products Sofn'free hair oil treatments, I've become a big fan of the Sofn'free GroHealthy Strengthening Crème and Sofn'free Daily Hair Lotion, which don't use petrolatum or mineral oil. All Sofn'free GroHealthy products are a mix of milk, protein and olive oil. After trying out the Really Deep Conditioning Treatment and Leave-In Treatment, my final test was with the Three-Layer Growth Oil.
According to the bottle instructions, the milk protein soothes the scalp, adds shine and strengthens hair. The olive oil repairs damage and promotes a healthy scalp. The Omega 3 rebuilds, strengthens and protects hair. The Three-Layer Growth Oil can be used two to three times a week or for a pre-shampoo treatment.
Initially I thought this M&M product was unnecessary considering shampoo and conditioner are supposed to make hair shinier and stronger anyway.
I didn't originally understand how someone could use this on her hair two or three times a week without the hair becoming stringy since the product looks like a Whiskey Sour. But when you shake it up and pour it into your hands and on your hair, strangely it doesn't fall through my fingers the way I thought it would. I used the Three-Layer Growth Oil before I got ready to wash my hair since it was dry and itchy, and the feel of the oil was thicker than expected. I combed it through my hair, and it didn't ruin the flat iron hairstyle I was wearing so it really can be used on dry hair.
However, since I used it as a pre-shampoo, I liked the clean perfume smell it left in my hair and how it immediately made the itching stop. For someone who is going for a "wet look" hairstyle, this product is good for styling purposes too because it does make hair shiny. I compared the ingredients in this product versus the four others, and one unique product in the Three-Layer Growth Oil is honey. When washed out, the oil resembles a light shampoo white but the smell still stays even after I used another type of shampoo and conditioner.
After I washed my hair, I used the Leave-In Treatment to bring some moisture back from the shampoo and conditioner set, plus it's useful for combing out wet hair. After drying my hair, I used the Sofn'free GroHealthy Strengthening Crème in my scalp area and Sofn'free Daily Hair Lotion to straighten my hair out a little after it'd puffed up from the hair dryer. The hair lotion is really useful for wrapping hair, too.
Is the Three-Layer Growth Oil necessary? Although it smells good and calmed my scalp down, I probably wouldn't buy it for hair washing purposes. I would, however, recommend those who have excessive dry hair or who are in between washes to use this to give hair some much-needed oil. If you have to oil your hair more than once a week, this is a good product to use but it may be excessive for those who only need to oil their hair weekly. Peopl with dull hair or who want that "fresh out of the shower" shiny look, the Sofn'free GroHealthy Three-Layer Growth Oil is ideal for you.
