Typhoon is one of 3 flavors introduced in April 2010 by Pepsi Co. in continuation of their Mountain Dew Dewmocracy campaign. The flavor was designed by Mountain Dew fans in the previous Dewmocracy campaign and consumers get to vote for their favorite 2010 Dewmocracy flavor; the winning flavor will become part of the Mountain Dew lineup.
The key difference between Typhoon and regular Mountain Dew is the packaging, coloring, and of course the taste. The packaging is red with colors such as yellow, orange, and purple in the design and logo. The nutritional facts and ingredients remain relatively unchanged. That stated, the "kick" from Mountain Dew Typhoon is about the same as any other of the regular Mountain Dew varieties, except for Mountain Dew AMP.
The color of Mountain Dew Typhoon is somewhere in between red and orange. If you took Livewire and Code Red and combined them you'd get something that looked like Typhoon.
The initial smell is very sweet and a bit fruity which is consistent with the description of a "punchy tropical dew."
The first sip is very sweet, almost candy like in its sweetness. It tastes more like a tropical flavored candy than a fruit punch. Although depending on your tastes, you might find it to be like standard fruit punch. You could even say at times it tastes like drinking liquid cotton candy.
Throughout drinking Typhoon, I noticed the candy like taste continued. My first reaction was "this one will be the winner of the 2010 Dewmocracy campaign for sure. The flavor was bold and stood out among the other flavors.
However the sweetness is the same thing that could turn one off to Typhoon. The classic Mountain Dew taste is nearly lost under the tropical flavoring. Plus some will find the candy taste too strong and harder to finish an entire 20 ounce bottle. If you don't have a sweet tooth you may not enjoy Typhoon very much.
Overall this flavor has a high probability of winning if only because of the standout taste. The other two 2010 Dewmocracy flavors: Whiteout and Distortion rely more on milder taste textures. Distortion relies on lime flavor, which has been done to nearly every soda out there, and has been hard to find in distribution.
As with all Dewmocracy flavors, Typhoon is extremely limited and unless it wins, it'll be discontinued once supplies run out. Worth a try if you like sweet drinks. If you hate Mountain Dew, you may still want to try it since the Dew flavor is almost non existent under the punchiness.

Post a Commentwondered about it but to be honest don't even care for the original
Mountain Dew is very popular in the south.
Cool! I must try these. It is sad... I haven't even heard of the new flavors. The Typhoon sounds good, but I love classic Dew. Thanks for this! Now I know it is out there.
