Review: MyGallons.Com

How Does MyGallons.Com Compare to Others?

Matt A. Maxx
MyGallons.com is a new Web site service that allows you to buy your gas today and then go pick it up tomorrow at the gas station when prices are higher. If you buy gas from MyGallons.com today for $4.50, you can go get it when gas is at $6.50 a gallon. This sounds good on the surface, but there's a catch:

How Does MyGallons.com Compare To Others?

MyGallons.com charges 29.95 per year to be a member. This money will be refunded if you have not saved at least this amount on gasoline throughout the year. If you go over the amount of gasoline that you have purchased from MyGallon.com while at a pump filling up your tank, you are charged a 15.00 overdraft fee. According to the MyGallon.com Web site, there are over 400,000 brand name stations participating in this gas savings program with locations in all 50-states.

Costco is a place that some choose to fill up at because their gas is .10 to .15 cheaper per gallon. In some states like New Jersey, it is illegal for anybody to offer cheaper gas through a membership card. Membership at Costco is about 50.00 per year.

If we compare Costco membership to MyGallons.com, MyGallons.com is the cheaper option. MyGallons.com may also be the winner for quality in this comparison too, the internet if filled with people who do not seem to like how Costco gas acts in their cars.

New Car Gas Cards: Many new cars are offering a 2.99 per gallon price on gasoline for a period of three years type of deal. The problem with these 2.99 gasoline deals is that they limit your driving to just 12,000 miles per year. This is just going to work 25-miles down the road and back 5-days per week. These 2.99 cards also require you to pay using your credit card each month.

If we compare the New Car 2.99 deal to MyGallons.com, MyGallons.com comes out the winner. You save money by not buying a new car. The New Car 2.99 deal only runs for 3-years with limited mileage while the MyGallons.com system runs at your pace. MyGallons.com requires sporadic credit card payments while the other one has you paying credit card fees monthly.

GasBuddy.com and other Web sites are now available to help you to find the cheapest gasoline in your area. These sites provide running lists of where the cheapest gasoline prices are today, and then you drive to go get them.

When we compare MyGallons.com to GasBuddy.com it is time to stop and think for a minute. Is the 29.95 membership fee for MyGallons.com higher than driving around looking for cheaper prices? This would all depend upon where you live, how much time you have available to devote to gas track-downs, and how many miles per gallon your car gets.

Neither MyGallons.com nor GasBuddy.com would work for my situation; I live away from cities offering these services. However, if I were in a city, I drive a GEO that gets 50+mpg. Perhaps driving around with the GasBuddy.com plan would be cheaper for me than the MyGallons.com plan.

Conclusion: For daily driving, it is important to weigh your choices and do your math before deciding upon a gasoline program to go with. For trip driving, I'm rather convinced that MyGallons.com is the way to save some money by buying your gasoline months before your vacation starts.

I am glad that people are looking for possible solutions to the gas-price problem. However, I feel that we have accepted the fact that gas prices will increase, and nobody seems to be doing anything to STOP such abuse on the part of the already super rich gas companies, which have increased their earnings by very high percentages. How come nobody can put an end to this abusive situation? What is the government doing to help the tax payers so they can continue going to work (if they have a job), to continue paying taxes? People in government are making yearly salaries that compare to 3-4 years of work or normal citizens...nevertheless, what are they doing? I think it is time to start demanding answers from our representatives, because their work (or lack of it) leaves a lot to be desired. They are our hired employees, yet they are not doing their job, and they are not reporting to anyone. Maybe they need to be fired!

I love the comparisons you've done on this one and want to thank you for providing a link to my article :) Thank you. I do want to say that I am "test driving" My Gallons so I am not coming out and completely recommending it yet. I want to see if we actually save money. However, I do think it has potential, if it lives up to its promises. I loved your article, so nicely done...and not just because you connected to mine. It is a super article all on its own :)
