Review of Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin Sunblock Lotion

Most sunscreens claim that they are "hypo-allergenic." This term simply means the product supposedly produces fewer allergic reactions than other products. I use the word "supposedly" because, according to the FDA, any company may use this term for any cosmetic product. There are no federal standards that restrict or govern the use of this term.1

My skin is not ultra-sensitive. I normally use laundry detergents, scented body lotions, soaps, and other potentially irritating products without ill effects. Sunscreen, however, is another matter. More than once, I have donned sunscreen and found a day or two later that I have developed a terribly itchy rash that calms in the shade and erupts with sun exposure. Even after discontinuing the use of the sunscreen, I found the rash would continue for the better part of a week. Of course, these sunblock products I used claimed to be hypo-allergenic, but that label proved meaningless for me.

I have used Neutrogena's sunblock now for several years and have not yet experienced any negative reactions. Their Sensitive Skin Sunblock Lotion comes with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30. Obviously, Neutrogena markets this product toward people with sensitive skin, but it is suitable for any skin type. According to the product labeling, the active ingredient in this product is Titanium Dioxide (9.1%). They claim that their formula protects against both UVA and UVB rays. With a consistency similar to regular hand lotion, the sunblock rubs on smoothly with a fairly non-greasy feel.

Because this product is not waterproof, it should be reapplied after swimming and heavy sweating. Therefore, it probably is not a convenient choice for athletes or for children who tend to come in and out of the water frequently, especially if they don't seem to have a specific need for a sensitive skin formula.

Aside from those who seek a waterproof sunblock, I would highly recommend Neutrogena's Sensitive Skin Sunblock Lotion. My experience using this product has been totally satisfactory.
