Review: Newman's Own Organics Newman-O's, Wheat Free, Dairy Free Crème Cookies

Newman's Own Newman-O's are sandwich cookies similar to Oreo's. The main difference between them would be the organic ingredients, the fair trade chocolate, wheat-free ingredients and the profit going to charity that the Newman-O's have. Other than that they are like twins in the cookie world.

I purchased Newman's Own Newman-O's Wheat-free, Dairy-free cookies from Amazon.com. They were sold as a six pack, so I bought six 9-ounce packages. You can never have enough cookies, right? I am going to say that I distributed those packs among my friends because it makes me look better than saying I kept them all to myself. So, uh, yeah, thats what I did.

When I opened the first package the cookies looked like they had a bit of a party. Either that or they were trying unsuccessfully to make an escape, with an every man for themselves attitude. They were crumbled and many where on top of each other instead of in the nice uniform rows they are suppose to be in. The worst part is that in the back of my mind I have the idea that the crumbled and broken pieces don't really count calorie wise, so of course I had to eat those first before I had my actual cookie serving.

Several packages have been opened since the first and in each package the cookies were crumbled and thrown about. I went back to my 'trying to escape' theory and figured that must be it and some must have been successful as each package has spaces in each row that can fit at least 6 more cookies total. So, they either did not put enough cookies in to fill the rows which causes the cookies to flail about breaking and crumbling in transit or each package had about 6 cookies escape.

The cookies in taste are quite similar to Oreo's, but not exactly the same. They are just slightly less sweeter and they don't soften as quickly in milk as the other brand does. I don't think kids would complain if you bought these instead of the others. They would surely know the difference if they are old enough to read, as they say Newman on the cookies instead of Oreo.

The cookies are nice and chocolaty while the inside white vanilla cream is lightly creamy and sugary sweet. The powdered sugar taste of the cream stands out a bit more than the fat/creaminess, to me . Otherwise I think it is a perfect balance of cookies and cream.

Newman-O's are wheat-free but not gluten free. The first ingredient is barley flour which does contain gluten. Though, they do not try to hide the fact that it has gluten. It states right on the front of the package 'NOT a Gluten-free product.'

These are not necessarily much healthier than the average cookie, but the fact that they are organic, vegan, wheat-free and made sustainably makes them more worth purchasing and choosing over any other brand. I know for sure I will be purchasing Newman-O's again in the future.
