Review No. 2 of Brown Mackie College, North Canton

Inquiring minds at Brown Mackie College in North Canton want to know who I am. And better yet, they want to know who I was writing about in my first review. Word travels at the speed of light there, which prompts me to rename the college from Clown College to the School of Drama Queens and Kings. See, most people who attend Brown Mackie say they hate the school, but they take the loan check; and even some teachers there think the school is a joke, but they need the paycheck. And as long as money is more important than voicing how awful the school is, Brown Mackie will continue to enroll new victims.

I kid you not, the day after my first review was published, I received a call from the Dean. It seems she did some detective work to figure out who I was, since I don't use my real name on AC. Of course, she apologized for the bad experience I had. She even pulled up my transcript, and commented that I was an outstanding student. She told me she would see what she could do about placing me for an externship so I could, at least, finish out my program and receive my degree. It was almost as if she was really concerned about me as a person, as a student, than the bad review I had just written about her school.

And then the questions began. It lacked the face-to-face, hot seat, bright light, no water for me interrogation you see on CSI, but she was determined to know who I was writing about. I refused to give names. I don't believe giving the names of those people would better the school. She stated I was entitled to my opinion and I would receive a call from either her or the president of the school to follow-up. That was a month ago.

I'm writing this second review to prove a point. Had I not written the first review, I would just be another statistic to Brown Mackie College. I would've never gotten that call. Because I voiced my opinion, I may have cost the school some enrollees. So all of a sudden, it's a big deal I didn't finish my program. And although the conversation I had with the Dean was more about who I was referring to than my success, or lack thereof, as a student, I know it made a difference. Maybe not for me, because I haven't heard anything from the Dean since I refused to give her names, but maybe for someone who read my review.

Even if you aren't considering enrolling into Brown Mackie, be aware of the students from this college. If you overhear someone in your pharmacy, hospital, or doctor's office saying he/she graduated from Brown Mackie, red flag that person. Not all students from this school are incompetent, but obviously, you won't know who you should trust and who you shouldn't. Let me tell you this story, and you can be the judge: First of all, I was enrolled into the college the same day I applied. They didn't know who I was, what skills I had, if any, or what my grades were in high school. Basically, I decided what program to take, they placed me in it, and I started class a few days later. Along the way, I met some interesting people; particularly, a woman in the Pharmacy Technology program. To jump ahead, we were grading tests one day in class. We had to identify the symbol for liter, which is the upper case letter L; simply written L. This woman said, "I didn't write 'capital' in front of the letter L." Either this was great attention to detail or incredible stupidity. I tell you that also to tell you this: This same woman was in the Medical Assistant program before going on to the Pharmacy Technology program. She took the certification test twice and wasn't able to pass. Would you want this woman sticking you with a needle, or preparing your prescription?

The moral of the story: it may not take a genius to count out pills, but it only takes one stupid mistake to kill someone, and Brown Mackie College will have that person's blood on their hands. They are more concerned about the tuition money to build bigger schools so they can enroll more people, than the people they are enrolling. It isn't right for those who take their education seriously, it isn't right for those who enroll just for a check, and it isn't right to the patients these people are responsible for. The Dean has a lot of work to do, from presenting stricter guidelines for enrollees to "cleaning up" the students already attending to enforcing attendance and grade guidelines. Until Brown Mackie College "shapes up", they will be known as the welfare school, as the school who will enroll anyone, as a "Clown College". It only leaves me with one question: Why must a tragedy happen before people will speak out?

I am a current student a the BMC Atlanta Cam pass and the students are getting the tails screwed by the school. Work studies are being refuse pay for jobs done and the students are not being informed when they owe the school. the school is robing the federal government and student blind the school is currently 40,000 dollars over budget and it only 5 months after the physical year mark.

I don't know who would write positive blogs about BMC. I hadn't read anything negative about BMC until I researched them after a pre-admission conference. I have two degrees from a highly accredited university and was looking for a clinical degree. I went with an open mind expecting a professional environment similar to my previous experiences. I was sadly disappointed by BMC when I left after 20 minutes. No one should ever pay $26,000 for an associates degree that is 100 credit hours long,(my bachelors was 128) most associates degrees are 60-70 hours of coursework. I have a 3.9 GPA and am smarter than the average bear and I saw right through this mess. Do not attend BMC, DO YOUR RESEARCH first. I don't know of any college that is non-profit entity and BMC is raking in the profit at the expense of their unsuspecting future students. RUN as fast as you can from this scam.

...Remember, BMC is competing with other colleges, so it behooves them to provide accredited programs and to not lose that accreditation.

Also, the 'Upset" guest below should explain specifically what they did not know about drafting design that has made them unemployable in that field. It is my understanding that s/he should have gone through an externship, which would have made clear the real-world skills s/he still lacked. Was there no externship? What feedback did you elicit from your externship employer during your time there?

From what I am seeing and hearing over the past few months, I cannot say I have a bad opinion of Brown Mackie. They are a proprietary school- a private, for-profit business. If they do their job well, they will please the majority of students (they cannot please everyone) and remain viable. Most people are aware that happy students tend to not look for online sites to write compliments. Angry students are motivated to find places to vent, so we will naturally read more angry comments than happy ones. Since online commentary is biased towards anger, it is especially important to be specific about complaints.

If you read BMC's information pages (like http://www.brownmackie.edu/Accreditation.aspx) and talk to staff, they will tell you whether a program is accredited. Not all are, so you should find out before you decide on a major. This is something you should find out at any institution of higher education. Remember, BMC is competing with other colleges, so it behooves them to provid

  • Potential LPN student / BMC Canton3/19/2010

I'm curious of all the people having issues with BMC, what program were you in? I'm looking to get into their LPN program in Canton. Any advice? If you have had a bad exp, name names of what teacher, what class. Just saying "that guy that taught the one class i was in" tells everyone nothing. Not to mention you seem like you are fake. I'm looking for real info on the LPN program with real teachers names. You cant get in trouble legally so please let us all know.

I attended ETI now Brown Mackie and I did not get the education I needed. I took Drafting and Design. I have lost several jobs just because I was not educated enough to do the job and employers don't want to teach you. I can't believe I wasted my time.

  • Jerry Horan1/18/2010

My wife wasted her time here. None of the credits transfer to a real school because brown mackie is such a joke. Do Not waste your time if you can avoid it.

I too was a victim of Brown Mackie, in Louisville. So far I have invested 12 000 into a situstaion where my life was threatned by a menal student, to dealing with a over bearing admin person. I worked hard to make connections with the right ppl inmy field of choice, only to have ppl laugh at me ehne I tell the I attend Brown Mackie. They advertise small classes, yet we had to fight for seats in most classes. One time they had us in a 4X8 room, with 12 students!!! The program is not challenging, you have open book test and able to use yor notes, just so everyone would pass. Most classes would let out early. The atmospher of the class room were often unruly and loud, while student after student entered anytime they wanted. Please, if you are thinking about attending BMc do your research. I witnessed students struggling to find internships, again because no one wanta BMC student! I can go on and on, about this joke of a school, and hopefully real soo the public would know the real BMC a
