Review: Nutri-Grain Cereal Bars Apple Cinnamon is a Boring Bland Bar

Susan Slade
When we are on vacation I like to have plenty of snacks, especially for Len as he is diabetic, and can have sugar highs, and lows.

I picked up some Nutri-Grain Cereal Bars, as we wasn't sure whether we were having a timeshare, hotel efficiency, or a basic room. I figured this way we would get our cereal, even if we couldn't have it in a bowl with milk.

The one I thought we both could enjoy was the Apple Cinnamon. It states on the front of the packet that it has 'more of the whole grains your body needs'. The weight of the bar 1.3 ounce (37g).

When I took one out of the wrapper, and it was 4 inches long, by 1 and a half inches wide, and a quarter of an inch thick at the ends, and slightly thicker in the middle, I knew that this would be a mini-snack for Len.

Upon biting into the Nutri-Grain Cereal Bar, I found it to have much more pastry, than filling. The pastry is soft, and chewy, and isn't that pleasant. What I could taste of the filling was okay. I wish that there was more apple in it, and actually tiny pieces of apple, rather than just a gel, or paste. The amount of cinnamon was just about right.

One bar contains 130 calories, of which 30 are from fat. When I have a bowl of cereal and use skimmed/fat free milk, I probably have twice as many calories, but am full for the whole morning. I didn't even feel that I had eaten anything at all.

I gave Len one to try, and he told me that the pastry tasted awful, and he didn't finish his.

A little more nutrition facts:
Total fat 3g
Saturated fat 0.05g
Trans fat 0g
Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 105mg
Total Carbs. 24g
Dietary Fiber 2g
Sugars 12g
Protein 2g

There seems an awful lot of ingredients for such a small bar. The dietary exchange for Len would have been 1 1/2 Carbohydrates, 1/2 Fat, if he had finished it.

Here is a little more important information:

'Allergen Information
Milk, Soy, Wheat
Kosher Dairy'

These bars are from Kellogg, and I have to tell you that I will probably give the other ones to a friend, that is a caregiver at nights. She will be happy with snacks during her shift.

I personally wouldn't purchase them again.
