Review: Olay Total Effects Exfoliating Body Wash

Drew Taylor
Olay Total Effects body wash comes in two versions, deep penetrating moisture and exfoliate and replenish. I purchased the exfoliate and replenish formula at CVS. The label makes very specific claims about improving the skin's appearance and promises seven anti-aging effects. Within a month of use, the body wash is supposed to improve elasticity, relieve dryness, deeply condition skin, brighten dull skin, even skin tone, smooth rough skin and minimize the appearance of dry lines.

First Impressions
The fragrance is very light with a hint of watermelon. That may sound strange, but I have noticed the scent of watermelon in some designer perfumes. The subtle fragrance is not noticeable after showering and does not compete with my perfume.

The Olay body wash is thick and lathers with a washcloth or body pouf. The smooth exfoliating beads easily rinse clean. Because of the exfoliating beads, this body wash is not good for shaving.

Initially, I did not think much of this body wash. Then, after two uses, I realized my skin was soft even though I had forgotten to use body lotion. That is a big plus because my skin is prone to dryness and flaking.

Is Olay Total Effects body wash worth the price?
Averaging $8 to $10 per 15.2-ounce bottle, this brand is more expensive than typical body washes. For me, it is worth the cost because it eliminates the time-consuming process of applying body lotion. Unlike some exfoliating body washes, the Olay Total Effects is not too harsh or scratchy.

Room for Improvement
After several uses, I felt a residue on my skin. It was heavier than traditional lotion and almost waxy. I checked the ingredient list and saw petrolatum and mineral oil. Although this product moisturizes quite well, I would prefer to use other humectants and moisturizers.

The Last Word
I have been using the Olay Total Effects body wash for over a month now. I can see the improvements listed on the bottle with the exception of two. I do not have an issue with dry lines or discoloration. So, I did not notice any difference there. I will continue to use the Olay Total Effects, but limit it to once or twice weekly to avoid the problem with residue.
