Review: Orville Redenbacher's 100 Calorie Kettle Korn in Mini Bags

Louisa Burgess
I've never had real, honest to goodness homemade Kettle Corn, so my frame of reference is limited giving the low-calorie microwave version of this treat a better chance of satisfying me. I have had regular calorie microwave Kettle Corn in several different brands, including Orville Redenbacher's and declare it quite tasty. As a matter of fact, I think I might be ready to die and go to heaven if I ever had the good fortune to experience real, homemade Kettle Corn. What is shocking to me is that it's taken me to this ripe old age to experience the wonders of Kettle Corn to begin with.

In case you are unfamiliar, Kettle Corn is less sweet than say caramel corn and less salty than regular popcorn with salt. Apparently, it originated in the United States back in the 1700's according to Wikipedia. All I can tell you is that the regular microwave versions on the market are enough to make me swoon. Imagine just how good it would be with real sugar added instead of the sucrose that is used in all sweet flavored microwave popcorns!

Orville Redenbacher's microwave Kettle Korn in mini bags in the regular version comes in at a whopping 240 calories, 160 calories from fat. Too fattening for a frequent snack. So I decided to try the 100 calorie mini bags. I like mini bags of popcorn as a snack.

Smart Pop! is Orville Redenbacher's line of low calorie popcorns. They are advertised as 94% fat free. The Kettle Korn verson comes in a regular size and the 100 calorie mini bags. They have 0mg cholesterol and 0g trans fat per serving. I have to say, the serving size is very adequate. The taste? Well, it's okay. Sorry to say, it didn't come in as tasty as the regular Kettle Korn. It must be that the fat content adds to the taste enough to make a difference.

Will I eat it again? Yes. It's not bad. That's the best way to put it. It's simply not the downright delicious flavor I've come to expect with Kettle corn. Though it was somewhat disappointing to me, it was good enough that the 10 bags went quite quickly in this household.
