Review: Our Family Brand Blueberry Toaster Pastries

Steve Helmer
I have been making more of an effort to stay within a budget; especially when it comes to food costs. And, as part of that, I have tried to stop buying expensive gas station breakfast sandwiches or food items from the local grocery store deli while on my way to work and, instead, have been picking up breakfast items that can last me a few days.

That's why, this morning, I decided to buy a box of blueberry toaster pastries from the brand Our Family. I had actually walked into that section of the store looking for a breakfast/granola bar option and, when I didn't see anything appetizing, I decided to buy a box of Pop Tarts instead. This brand was considerably cheaper than the Pop Tarts at $1.75 so I decided to give it a try.

After trying the Our Family Blueberry Toaster Pastries, I kind of regret not spending a bit more money on the Pop Tart brand (or a brand of granola bars) instead.

Even though I do have access to a microwave, I rarely cook anything at the office and part of the reason I picked the toaster pastries was the fact I knew I could eat these cold as well as hot. Unfortunately for this brand, I don't think warming them up first would have made that much of a difference.

One of the first things I noticed about this brand was the pastries were very hard. Most toaster pastries (including Pop Tarts) are somewhat hard when they aren't cooked. But, these were hard to the point they seemed like they were stale (and I did check the expiration date; June 2011).

Another thing I didn't like about this brand was the lack of fruit filling inside the pastries. The first one I tried took three bites before I tasted any of the blueberry filling. And, considering these were already hard and dry to begin with, that was not very enjoyable for me.

I still have most of the box left and will make an effort to finish it before I buy something else to eat at work. However, this is the last time I will buy this particular brand of toaster pastries. They might have been much more affordable, but there was definitely a significant drop off in terms of overall quality. I would not recommend buying this brand if you see them in your grocery store's breakfast section.
