Padres Mexican Restaurant is in the Shops at Luella complex next to the Publix supermarket. There is plenty of well-lit parking. Inside they have friendly help who will direct you to the family or bar area. Both are spacious but I like the bar better. There they have at least ten large flat screen TVs showing the latest sporting and news events. They have TVs in the family area but not as many. The restrooms are clean.
The food is what you would expect. I think all the Mexican restaurants in the area are run by the same group because the menus are almost identical. I order the "speedy Gonzales" at five different places and get the same thing. Still the food is fresh and the chips crisp. They do a good job of getting your order out quickly and supplying you with chips, salsa, napkins- really anything you want, until the food comes. It is a gluttonous race to see how many free chips you can eat before the food comes and then a test to see if you can eat your meal and hold it down. In the end you are very full and satisfied.
I would not rate Padres high on the quality of the food, although it is good and clean. What is exceptional here is the service. The staff guides you through your feeding frenzy with care. From the first extra coke when your mouth is burning to the runny nose from the hot peppers they appear with napkins and support. Maybe if I ate more slowly I could tell if the food was really good or not.
You can eat lunch at Padres for under ten dollars; dinner is higher. A good dish is the fajitas and the shrimp burrito. Being next to a grocery store can't hurt their food quality. They give you plenty to eat, even sticking the Mexican flag into you entrees.
So I conclude Padres Mexican Restaurant is a great Mexican Restaurant you can count on for good food and service. It may not be the place to socialize but it is to eat. They are starting to get their trivia night established. If they do it could turn into a local hangout where there was only a cow pasture five years ago.
