Review of Pantene Curly Hair Series for Natural 4B Afro Textured Hair

Pantene's Curly Hair Series appears to be made for all hair texture types. It can be challenging to find a complete line of hair products that works without drying out the hair strands. Here is my styling experience with the Pantene Curly Hair Series on shoulder-length, natural, afro hair.

Dry to Moisturized Shampoo and Conditioner

Before attempting to wash and deep condition the hair, my hair was detangled dry. When there were tangled sections that were challenging, I added a bit of the Dry to Moisturized Conditioner to quickly unravel the hair. Then, 10 sections of hair were twisted into large, two-strand twists. Sectioning the hair with braids or plats would be equally useful on shorter hair lengths.

The shampoo is a very thick consistency that feels almost like a conditioner. The shampoo was lightly rubbed on the scalp to remove build-up. Then the shampoo was squeezed throughout the length of the twists. It leaves a very clean feeling on the scalp that is not overly drying.

Conditioning was done by simply working the product through to the ends of the hair without unraveling the twists. The directions stated to concentrate on the ends of the hair.

Curly Hair Series Deep Moisturizing Treatment

The Curly Hair Series Deep Moisturizing Treatment has a pleasant fragrance. After washing and conditioning, it is to be left on the hair for five minutes. The thickness of the conditioner made it very easy to comb out the hair in sections in the shower with a wide-tooth comb. The sections were combed through one at a time and re-twisted.

Results

Overall, I was impressed with the way the shampoo felt while cleansing my scalp. I enjoyed the thick consistency of the shampoo. It did not leave any product build-up from my previous hair style, which consisted of two-strand micro twists created with a cream-based styling product. The conditioner seemed lightweight and was easy to rinse clean.

The deep moisturizing treatment only took a few minutes, and I definitely would use it regularly. The only product that did not work for my hair was the styling gel, in holding strength number three. The gel works well to slick down fly-away strands, or to slick down the front of the hair for an afro puff. However, it is not the right choice for shingling or wearing a wash and go. My towel dried hair started to immediately shrink all the way up to under two inches. With the next section, I layered olive oil and then applied the gel, and there was a bit less shrinkage. The gel is not a curl elongator or curl creator. I would suggest the gel for holding wet-styled braids or twists, but not for creating curls without a twist set or stretching the hair with a diffuser.
