Review Pat Burroughs' Green Tomato Pie Recipe

Bubba
I love Fried Green Tomatoes. This time of year they are a inexpensive comfort food that is a regular part of our diet. When I saw Pat Burroughs' Green Tomato Pie recipe published I just had to try it. This too is a simple recipe that will stretch our food budget a bit more. Y'all can also enjoy this fabulous pie recipe @ http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1123052/green_tomato_pie.html?cat=2. In thinking about this pie I did some research. The Food Network.com shows several recipes and a Google of Green Tomato Pie also brought several more examples. All of the recipes I read were much more complex. One even included apples.

The Queen Goddess made a flaky pie crust for me. It was so flaky and light I had to rush getting the tomatoes into the pie pan so it wouldn't float away. To be honest I have trouble with pie crust so when the Queen Goddess isn't available the Pillsbury Doughboy and I are best friends. I made a deep dish pie and used about 5 cups of green tomatoes diced about 1". I washed and did not peal the green tomatoes. I must admit I added a teaspoon of nutmeg and a half teaspoon of salt. It was a gut instinct thing. I also premixed all the dry ingredients before sprinkling them over the green tomatoes.

The flavor of this pie was a subtle sweet/tart kind of along the lines of Rhubarb Pie. The texture was similar to the apple pie Grandma use to make. The eye appeal of the off green center was amazing. I don't know if I should file this in the dessert section of my recipes or the center of the plate section. Last night we had a crisp green salad and 1/6 of the pie and were satisfied. I could easily see serving it with a slab of sharp cheese or some French Vanilla ice cream and a steaming hot mug of Columbian Coffee. Perhaps candles and a little Dean Martin in the CD player... and the Queen Goddess to share with.

I must confess I have never eaten a piece of pie that I didn't enjoy. Some were better than others but all were edible. Pat Burroughs' Green Tomato Pie is a wonderful addition to my recipe box. Better than that it will be a regular supper item as long as I can find green tomatoes. Perhaps I will try to grow some indoors this winter. Y'all gotta try this recipe soon. You deserve a great pie today. Mizpah. ;-}}>
