First off, PataPon is a war game. You pick different types of units to command, equip them with armor and weapons, and send them off into battle. So far there is nothing new here. The kicker is that to advance your army, you must complete small four button combinations to a beat. If you complete the sequence in order, your army will make the moves you want. If not, they could make moves that will cost you the war. You also have to choose the right counteracting move against your enemy as they also will defend or advance. PataPon is rhythm driven and also has a lot of mini games with it.
The more you complete the sequences of buttons, the more points and different attacks you will be able to free up. You can fight against monsters or opposing armies at different points of the game. PataPon also has mini games like music sequences by themselves which break up the monotony of just playing in a battle. PataPon borrows from chess' motto. You must always be one step ahead of the game. If you choose the right combination of attacking, defending, and charging, you will be able to defeat any of PataPon's challenges.
PataPon's weaknesses come only at certain points. The tutorials are not that great of a help. You can read them all day and still not have a great understanding of the game. With anything, the best advice a serious gamer like me can give you is to try and try again. You can also go online to get great information. Another snag in PataPon is that the game doesn't give you a lot of weapons. It is not uncommon to have soldiers with weak weapons in the back of the army, even in later parts of the game. This is disappointing. A soldier is only as good as his weapons in this game so it makes for a hard time to build a formidable army.
Be prepared to fight the same bosses and armies to make up for this flaw in PataPon. The graphics are okay. They are on the arcade side of gaming which is good once in awhile. The game play is very nice. If you have no problem keeping on beat and good hand and eye coordination, then you should do just fine in this game. The game retails around $20.00 which is a plus. You won't have to hurt you pockets to play this game. As someone who has played and enjoyed this game, I give it a B+ overall. I recommend PataPon to anyone who wants something different from their gaming experience.
