In the past, I took my seven Chihuahuas to the vet to have their nails clipped and filed. It cost $10 each, which was expensive because I have so many dogs. I wanted to learn how to clip their nails and save money.
I purchased the regular nail clippers sold in the dog supply area in the store. Attempting to clip the first dog's nails turned out to be a fiasco. There was absolutely no cooperation on the part of my dogs. They squirmed and fought even with the help of my son.
Then the injuries began. I hate to hurt my dogs in any manner, when they hurt I hurt. Being an amateur, I did not know the extent the clippers would cause injuries. When I cut a nail too short or apparently clipped the "quick", the dogs screamed in pain and the nail bled. I finally realized that I was not qualified to clip their nails with the cumbersome clippers and squirming dogs. I did not fully understand how to avoid the "quick", either.
Then the commercial from Pedi Paws on their Pedicure product began appearing on TV. It asserted the following claims on its site:
The new, fast, easy and gentle way to give your pet a perfect pedicure in just minutes
Perfectly controlled so your pet is perfectly safe
In seconds sharp and jagged edges are gone
It's easy to use and there's no mess
The price is reasonable at $19.99 plus shipping and handling. This is much cheaper than $70 I paid at the vet about every 2-3 weeks. The Pedicure is sold in regular and petite nail sizes, which is perfect because I have Chihuahuas.
When I received my product, the Pedicure Petite, I was very excited to begin using it. The package contains15 buffers to change when needed; these are like sandpaper drums. They are placed in the Pedicure attached to the rotary tool. There are nail guards in the plastic cover that lines up with a specific dog's nail size to prevent shaving too far. The product also comes with a plug-in charger no batteries are required.
My first attempt went well because Rudy cooperated and did not fight. However, she was the only one who did not squirm. It did not hurt or injure her nails and there was no bleeding. According to the Pedicure commercial, even though the nail is clipped with the old clippers correctly, the clippers may still cause damage with the exerted pressure.
I was able to give Rudy a pedicure until her nails were short; the product allows filing those sharp and jagged edges without the need for a separate file. Rudy hates short nails because now she cannot grab my bottom lip to open my mouth for kisses. That does not deter her from trying though.
On the commercial, the dogs sit calmly while the owner uses the Pedicure, one even handing over its paw. Well, mine are not that accommodating. Unfortunately, my Chihuahuas remember the last time I used the old clippers and caused bleeding and pain.
I have to try different psychological assurances to get them to cooperate. I let them see how Rudy did not receive injuries or pain while I utilized the Pedicure. I did not have to worry about the quick because of the nail guards attached to the Pedicure product. So far, I still need the aid of my son. It is funny because my Chihuahuas only weigh between 2 lbs and 11 lbs. but I don't want to hurt them during their resistance.
My only complaint is the multiple emails, sometimes several a day from the company. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend giving out your email address during the ordering process. Other than that, this product is worth its price and the advertisement is correct with its claims.

Post a CommentThere seems to be many imitators now that the product came out. When I bought mine, it was specific for petite dogs so I can adjust the holes by turning to different sizes. At least 3 fit my chihuahuas. I'm afraid these imitators are using names so similiar that it is difficult to tell which one is authentic. thanks for the comment
I had a little trouble with the Pedipaws with my 3lb Chihuahua. The tool was too large for her tiny nails and it would not shave her nails very well. So i returned the tool. Later I saw a Petit Pedipaws on the net that costs much more. So I decided to go to a groomer and have them teach me the proper way to clip the nails with the scissors. I still have to file the sharp edges of the nails a little but my dog does not seem to mind. There are lots of instructions on the net to clip nails but I am a hands on learner and it worked. I think Pedipaws is a good product for larger dogs--I have friends that use it on Poms and other dogs successfully
