Review of Post Shredded Wheat Lightly Frosted Cereal, Spoon-Sized

Katri Marson
As someone who avoids animal products, I haven't been able to eat frosted shredded wheat, at least the Kellogg's brand, because of the very unnecessary gelatin they use in the frosted coating. It wasn't until recently that I discovered Post brand also makes a frosted shredded wheat product called, Post Shredded Wheat Lightly Frosted.

I bought Post Lightly Frosted Shredded Wheat, spoon-size, at Amazon.com in a pack of four boxes (19 ounces each) through their Subscribe and Save program at about $1.90 a box. I have never had the Post brand before, but I figured they wouldn't be much different from the ones I remembered from my past, which I can't eat anymore, so I felt safe in buying more than one box.

Thankfully, I was right. The taste was just like I remembered it being. The one thing I do not remember is them being so sweet. I couldn't believe it when I read the nutritional information on how much sugar they have in them - 12 grams of sugar per serving. That is three teaspoons of sugar per serving. Eeeek, is that really a good way to start of a day with that much sugar? I know it is whole grain and lots of fiber and everything, but still, that is a lot of sugar.

It tasted about as sweet as the amount of sugar listed. I added rice milk to it and it was so sweet. The sweetness made it a good dessert but not really a breakfast for me personally. They are really good. I like to munch on them like a snack and for some reason I think they do not taste as sweet when they are not soaked in milk, but the amount of sugar is still there and that bothers me.

If you do not care so much about the three teaspoons of sugar per serving, they do taste really good. They even hold up in rice milk really well - they do not get soggy quickly. They soften and expand creating the perfect texture.

You can't go wrong with the whole grain wheat, giving it 6 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein. Even with the excess sugar, it might be a good step up for anyone who is used to eating the sugary refined cereals - a good way to step up to whole grain.

I did a comparison and found that the Kellogg's brand has the same amount of sugar, though part of the sugar in Kellogg's is high fructose corn syrup, while Post brand is just sugar and brown sugar. So if you do not care about the gelatin, like I do, but you do care about consuming corn syrup, you can easily satisfy your craving for frosted shredded wheat with the Post brand. The nutritional facts for the two are almost identical.

All in all, I do plan on purchasing this cereal again, on occasion, but as a snack or treat. I recommend it for anyone looking for a whole grain cereal or anyone to switch from the non-animal friendly Kellogg's.
