Review of the Presidents of the United States of America's Self-Titled Album

Fun!

The Presidents of the United States of America's grammy-nominated self-titled debut item was the first cassette tape I ever purchased. It was released in March of 2005. I was about 13 and my mother was less than pleased when we played it in the car and there was swearing in the first track, Kitty. The nice things about the Presidents is that their songs are fun. They're a little silly (or a lot silly!) and easy to sing along to. Kitty is, quite simply, about a cat that was left out all night, and is cuddly when she comes in, then scratches her owner! A whole song, just about that. The background lyrics are "meow."

The album doesn't get any less silly, with songs like Dune Buggy, which is about a spider driving a dunebuggy, and has lots of fun wordplay, Lump (which was immortalized as one of the songs Weird Al parodied with "Gump"), We Are Not Going To Make It, which sounds like a rock anthem, and Candy, which is about the devil being made of candy. Social commentary (joking) comes to the forefront with Naked and Famous, where the chorus states "Everybody wants to be naked and famous." Peaches was a popular song when the album came out as well. "Peaches come from a can, they were put there by a man in a factory downtown."

If you're looking for a fun, lighthearted album with a little influence from the grunge era, try out the Presidents.
