Review of the Rachael Ray Furi Gusto Grip Knives

Ryanick Paige
Now that we have been settled into our house, I have slowly begun replacing our old and lower quality kitchen products with better ones that will last. I attempted this with a set of Cuisinart Knives I had written about in a previous review and it did not work out so well. Unhappy with my Cuisinart purchase, I decided to cut my loses and purchase another new set of knives. This time I came across a set of Rachael Ray Furi Gusto-Grip Knives in an 8-piece set. I was a good deal with good reviews so I decided to give them a shot.

When the UPS driver (who I am sure hates me since I am the queen of internet shopping and have packages delivered up 15 steps almost daily it seems) leaves the box at my door, I immediately grab it and I am surprised by the weight of the package. It is heavy, I do not remember "that other brand" being as heavy, and it contained more knives. The Rachael Ray set that I ordered was an 8 piece set that contained a 3.5-inch paring knife, 5-inch boning knife; 6 inch serrated utility knife, carving fork, 8-inch carving knife, 8-inch bread knife, 7-inch East/West Santoku knife, and a birch block.

As I open them to check them over, I am again surprised by their sturdy construction and weight of the Rachael Ray knives. The orange handle will definitely stand out in my kitchen and clash with the décor but it is something that I am willing to live with for a quality product. The handles are unlike anything I have felt on a knife before. An almost sticky feeling, soft, and spongy, which I later read to be a polypropylene covered with a synthetic rubber to provide a non-slip handle for safety. As for the weight of the package, it was caused by the weight of the knives and the counter weights used to balance the knives for easy handling and use.

It did not matter whether I was slicing something as delicate as a ripe tomato or hacking through a piece of half-frozen roast, the Rachael Ray knives handled it all. This is a set of knives that I would recommend to my friends and family to buy if they are in need of new knives. This Rachael Ray set may have fewer knives than other brands at comparable prices but the quality and durability are worth it.

The two knife set in the bamboo case is available at Costco in Alaska for $49.95. I'm wonder how the knives compare to other, high-end santoku knives from Kershaw-Shun, Al Mar, and other Japanese manufacturers.

I want Alton Brown's mixer! I have heard very good things about these knives, it is nice to hear it from some one I trust though.

As a chef, I can attest to the fact that a professional set of kitchen knives is a must-have item. I adore Rachel Ray and was considering purchasing this very set of knives. However, my husband attended a trade show last week and much to my surprise he brought home an entire set of "The T.V. Chef's" knives. I have no knowledge of these knives, but they have "As Seen on TV" printed all over the packaging. I haven't used them yet, but can't wait to give them a try because my other knives as a dull as a butter knife. Nice job on this review. Perhaps you should send the link to Rachel Ray and let her know you've written a review of her products?? And maybe you can give your UPS driver a home-baked gift for making all those trips up your stairs, LOL.
