Review of the Restaurant Klabaurtermann in Heiligenhafen, Germany

Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay

We make frequent trips down into Germany for shopping and booze. Each time we like to explore a different town. This past week found us in the delightful seaside town of Heiligenhafen in Northern Germany. As usual, we sought out the most promising restaurant with our mouths watering for some good Schnitzel. We found it at Restaurant Klabaurtermann right on the main strip by the bay.

Klabaurtermann has some great sidewalk seating outside their typically German building, but it was raining off and on the day of this adventure so we stepped inside to stay dry. Had it been sunny out though, I most definitely would have enjoyed people watching from one of the umbrella-covered bistro tables. There is a nice view of the bay from here, and Klabaurtermann is nestled in amongst all the great little boutiques.

Upon entering, we were greeted at the fully-stocked bar by the very friendly manager. He spoke fluent English, so language was not a barrier. With so many different languages in the nearby countries, English has become the default for businesses so you should have no problem communicating here.

We were seated at a very roomy and comfortable booth. The restaurant is all about dark woods with a nautical theme. Very fitting for Heiligenhafen. It was warm and cozy, a welcome relief to the rain outside.

Service was superb at Klabaurtermann. We never had to wait for anything. Our drinks were refilled with perfect timing, and the food arrived very quickly. My husband and I went with the Weinerschnitzel Special for 11euros that we had seen on the sidewalk placard, and our friends went with a nice Jagerschnitzel for 13euros.

The special came with boiled potatoes in a nice brown sauce and a heaping portion of a red cabbage kraut. This was heaven, folks. I mean close-your-eyes and moaning good. I've never had a bad schnitzel in Germany, but this ranks among the top. Seriously good.

Our friends' Schnitzel came with Pomme Frittes and was covered in a mushroom sauce. They ate every last drop and raved about how very good it was.

The four of us had eaten together on a previous trip to Fehmarn also, and while Landhaus was very good, Klabaurtermann was better by all of our estimations.

Klabaurtermann also has numerous seafood dishes on the menu if you have already eaten your fill of Schnitzel whilst wandering the amazing German countryside. Some other patrons ordered pasta dishes and man oh man were those bowls big. It smelled wonderful, too.

If you order a beer, you can specify the size. I went with a Coca-cola, but the other three had humongous beers. I don't see how they drank the whole things, but they did. Huge, I tell you!

Smoking is allowed here, as it is all over Germany, until January 2008. then the laws will change to ban smoking in restaurants. Shame, that. Germany and Denmark were the last bastions of sanity in the world. Now they have both caved in to world pressure. Ah well. If you wish to smoke here after this goes into effect, there are always the sidewalk tables, or the gorgeous garden tables out back surrounded by beautiful flowers.

I very highly recommend Restaurant Klabaurtermann if you find yourself in Heiligenhafen, Germany... and you should make plans to visit this town. The community is Old World fun, and the food & service at Klabaurtermann is outstanding.

Oh! Reminded me of this quaint little corner bar outside of Hanau! Was my favorite spot for gyros, schnitzel, and after dinner dessert shots!

I haven't had German food in a while. I guess I'll have a chance next week in the Frankfurt A/M flughof...

I can't believe that they're banning smoking in the restaurants in Germany! Are they taking the cigarette machines off the street corners as well?

Such a wonderful opening sentence. And I like the idea of huge beer.
