Review: Revlon Matte Lipstick in "Really Red"

Earlier this year I'd seen an ad featuring Revlon's new line of matte lipsticks. I thought the model's makeup looked gorgeous, it was very glam and old Hollywood.

At the time I'd just started to get into wearing lipsticks, so I thought the Revlon lipsticks would be a good addition to my collection. I picked up a few shades in the spring like Pink About It, Strawberry Suede, Nude Attitude, and Pink Pout. Now that fall's around the corner I wanted to try some of the darker shades in the matte collection, so I recently bought a tube in the Really Red color.

The lipstick comes in a sleek black and silver tube that's made from a matte looking plastic. The tube has a c-thru top and the lipstick inside resembles a brick red shade, even the sticker on the bottom of the tube is a brick red color, so I assumed that's how it would look.

But looks were deceiving because once I applied the Revlon lipstick the color turned out to be more like a bright fire engine, sexy siren red. It's definitely a true red.

The color is intense and rich so one swipe of it gave my lips a lot of color, but I put on three layers for a more bold and dramatic effect. I loved this shade, it's beautiful, but unfortunately it wasn't the right one for me. I have a honey brown skin tone, and this just color just made me look sallow. I needed a deeper shade of red, I think this one was too bright.

The ad claimed that the matte lipsticks had "smooth-sueded finishes," and that the "color glides effortlessly across lips without ever drying, caking, or flaking."

I thought the texture was great. It did go on very smoothly and it had a satiny feel, like I was applying a lip balm that wasn't oily. The color did resemble a soft suede, and even after 3 layers it didn't clump up or become flaky, and it didn't dry out my lips at all.

In the End...

Even though the Revlon Really Red was not the right shade for me, I think the color is hot and sexy. It'd look great on someone with pale skin who wants to look like a bombshell. Because of the bold shade and texture I give this lipstick 4.5 out of 5 stars.
