Review of Roblox

Roblox Online Building Game

Matt Hobbs
If you are looking for a good online community game that is fun, builds creativity and can increase in complexity as your child gets older. Roblox is the place to go. Roblox only supports Windows at this time, it may work on Linux or Mac, but isn't supported by the Roblox Tech support.

What is Roblox?

"ROBLOX is an online virtual playground and workshop, where kids of all ages can safely interact, create, have fun, and learn. It's unique in that practically everything in this infinite playground is designed and constructed by individual members of the ROBLOX community."

You receive an undeveloped piece of property where you can build and create simple to advanced structures. The simple structures can be made by creating the building blocks, stretching them, duplicating them and copying them from a gallery.

Once you have mastered the basics, there are scripts that you can apply to the blocks and structures to make even more complicated interaction possible with your structures. For example, since this is an online community game, if you want certain areas where only your friends can access you can create a VIP door. This will keep folks out of your special areas. You can also visit other people's virtual lands and get great ideas from what others have built.

They have a chat mode called super safe chat mode that seems to keep anything inappropriate away of my child's eyes.

They also have an online forum that is helpful for any problems you might run into. It also does an incremental save when you save your game. So if something goes wrong with your Roblox environment or you want to get back to a previous time in your build, you revert to any number of save points that you create by saving the game.

The game is designed for ages 8-18, but it has appeal to many more ages. The basic membership is free and allows you to have your own property and build your heart's desires. They have a builders club that is currently about 5.95 a month or less if you prepay for 6 months or more. This allows you to get premium items as well as manage multiple environments. For now, my son still just uses the free version and it has kept him plenty busy creating and visiting other lands within Roblox.

There is a parental login that allows you to manage your child's account, monitor safety levels and configure their settings.

Overall, if you are looking for a way to build your child's creativity to build in a safe environment, Roblox is a great place to be.

hey, im a teen, but i play roblox. i recommend this game mainly to ages 10-16. if your kid's below 10, i recommmend having him use super safe chat unless you consider him mature or if he has a real life friend on roblox. of course, most players below ten really spend all their time building and going to games, but roblox is also kind of like a social networking site, but a lot safer for kids. it has messages, status updates and stuff, but theres no picture, location, age, any stuff like that.
also, lately the focus is moving more towards your character's physical appearance, with body morphs and way more hats than there should be. im currently protesting the current state of things, asking simply for an engine update so people can make more advanced places.
i have only two real complaints: 1. lately, a lot more stuff has been builders club only. of course, i HAVE builders club, as its cheap. if you dont really like auto-renewing memberships, DONT WORRY! only the monthly package auto-re
