Price of
Rolf's Patisserie Pecan Pie Slice
A 5oz slice, which is a thick and wide portion, costs $2.99, but a whole pie (that I believe is 8") costs $16.99. (Rolf's Patisserie is a gourmet bakery located in Licolnwood, IL, a suburb in the Chicago area. I know all of the Whole Foods in Chicago sell this pie, but I'm not sure if they are sold nationwide.)
Ingredients in
Rolf's Patisserie Pecan Pie Slice
The pie contains butter, white flour, sugar, milk, eggs, palm oil, soybean oil, canola oil, pecans, corn syrup, vanilla, and salt.
Nutrition Facts for
Rolf's Patisserie Pecan Pie Slice
The boxes of whole pies have the nutrition information of each pecan pie listed. But since I bought the slice which is cut by Whole Food's bakery and then placed into plastic containers with generic deli white labels, no nutritional data was listed.
Taste of
Rolf's Patisserie Pecan Pie Slice
This slice had me at hello. I really enjoyed it. The filling is covered with a layer of caramelized pecans. They're slightly sweet and roasted, but I liked the fact that they are large, fresh and plump. I've had pecan pies made with tiny dehydrated nuts that were just awful.
I also liked the filling. It's sweet, but it's not over the top, syrupy sweet, and it also has a buttery flavor that I really liked. The texture was also nice, it wasn't stiff or thick, it's solid, but it's not completely firm so there's a light, gooey moist feel to it that's awesome.
My only complaint with the filling is that since it's so light, the flavor of it could have been a bit bolder. I don't know if it should be more buttery or have a richer caramelized flavor, but something was missing for me.
But I loved the crust. Normally I'm always disappointed by pie crusts because they're usually too heavy and bland tasting, but Rolf's Patisserie's crust is great. It's golden, buttery, light, flaky, and tender, plus the taste of it compliments the filling and pecans quite well.
In the End...
Even though there's something a bit off with the filling to me, Rolf's Pecan Pie is still one of the best I've had. I will definitely be buying a whole pie for the holidays, and I'll be enjoying the slices year round. I recommend it to anyone looking for a rich and sweet tasting dessert. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
