Review: Sandra Bernhard Live at the Colony Theater in Miami, Florida

A Look at Bernhard's Musical Side

There's nothing quite like a hot, sticky, rainy night in South Florida in late July. One would think the rain would cool things off, right? Just ask someone who lives here and you'll realize how wrong that statement would be. So what better way to spend the evening than at the Colony Theater on South Beach with the incomparable Sandra Bernhard live in concert. For those people going to see Sandra for the first time who are not familiar with her live show: you may be in for a shock. True, she is a powerhouse entertainment force on stage. She sings (rather well actually), dances (sort of), and delves comedically into the world we live in with irreverence and an insight many of us wish we had. Her banter with the audience is legendary as she rolls with the punches and their frequent trips to the restroom. Nothing gets past her eagle eyes on stage and she makes those in attendance very aware she knows exactly what's going on and what we are collectively thinking. Though I have to admit I do enjoy the reverie she hearkens on those going to and returning from the lobby. Unfortunately for them their timing is way off. Instead of making the trek during a musical number the wayward wanderers always seem to make their way out during a monologue: fun for us, not so much for them. To Sandra's credit, she takes it all in stride and welcomes those back with applause and a snide remark or two. It's good stuff.

It's hard to believe Ms. Bernhard has been in the Entertainment biz for 30 years. Crisscrossing from film, music and comedy; like fine wine, she just seems to get better with age. Of course there certainly is a lot for the lady to dish about these days. From Paris, Lindsey and Britney (you know who they are - no last names required) to the world's politics and social climate; and yes, Florida took quite a hit from Sandra for 'f*****g up the election' a few years back. Thanks Sandy for the reminder. There was certainly no lack of material from which the diva could choose from. Musical numbers smartly mixed into her set kept the show fresh and lively. Belting out 'And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going,' as an opening number was defiantly one of the highlights of the night. Of course what would a Sandra appearance be without one of her signature tunes, Prince's "Little Red Corvette." It's a crowd pleaser every time. Her own personal spin on the classics she chooses to revamp are unique to say the least. Although I'm still not sure she has the snarl for Guns 'N Roses "Welcome To The Jungle," but she gave it one heck of an effort. Of course there are some original songs by Sandra herself that could rival anything on the charts today. Her ode to Britney was priceless. She has captured her magic on her latest CD "Everything Bad And Beautiful." The material on the CD is not from the latest show she's on the road with now, consider it the appetizer.

Most celebrities appear larger than life on stage, untouchable, unreachable. The same can be said for Sandra. The illusion is dispelled if you're fortunate to meet the lady face to face. She's not scary, really, she's not. Though she does wear a toughness on stage it is apparent it's all part of the act. Offstage she's incredibly personable, friendly, and has a smile, a hug, and autograph for everyone around. Seeing Sandra Bernhard live is truly a great entertaining way to spend an evening, no matter what the weather.
