Review: The Savoy Hotel in Skegness, England - Old-Fashioned Charm, Comfortable Accommodation

Skegness is one of the United Kingdom's oldest seaside resorts.Known jokingly as "Skeggy", Skegness is popular with families, the 20-somethings and old age pensioners, all who love the bracing sea air, the famously clean beach, and one of England's longest piers. On a recent trip to Skegness, my family and I stayed at The Savoy Hotel. A local favorite, The Savoy has been family-run for more than 25 years, and is one of the most popular seafront hotels in town.

Location of The Savoy - With one of the best locations in town, The Savoy is on the North Parade, right in the center of Skegness, on the seafront overlooking the water. It's also famous for its excellent proximity to the famous Skegness Pier, which you can see from many rooms of the hotel. You'll find The Savoy at 12 - 13 North Parade, PE25 2UB Skegnes.

Rooms at The Savoy - We arrived at The Savoy right after it had gone dark and, getting a little lost in Skegness, were around an hour later than we'd told the staff we'd arrive. No problems at all. We were greeted by what has to be some of the frienliest people in Skegness, and everyone at the hotel was like that during our two night stay.

We were checked in immediately upon arrival, given our keys and told where our rooms were. The woman at reception also told us dinner was served for another hour, if we wanted to eat, and that she'd keep the restaurant open a little longer for us if we needed a few extra minutes to get ready. We'd already made arrangements though to meet friends at a local pub, but it was nice to see how accommodating the hotel staff was.

We had two rooms during our stay. Mine was a regular single and my parents' room was a double, but both rooms were quite spacious. Rooms are spotlessly clean too and, with the views out over the seafront, they really are quite lovely.

I was also happy to see a tea/coffee-making tray, and each room has satellite TV and a radio alarm clock. Beds are very comfortable (I slept like a baby) and, unless you're unfortunately next to someone who is loud, the hotel itself is very quiet, so condusive to a great night's sleep.

Breakfast is included in the room rate and, as you order off a menu, you get pretty much what you like. There's the usual cooked British specials (bacon and egg, sausages, tomatoes, toast etc), as well as a selection of cereals and fresh fruit. Although portions aren't huge, they're perfectly adequate for most people and the food was perfectly cooked, arrived piping hot, and was delicious.

Room Rates - For such a centrally-located hotel and, particularly because of its sea views, room rates at The Savoy are cheap and, actually, quite a bit cheaper than we paid at another UK seaside resort, Southport, just a few days before. They also run lots of specials, senior citizens stay cheaper, and if you stay more than one night or a week, you get even cheaper rates still. We only paid £80.00 ($125) per room for two nights, which also includes the nice breakfast.

You can also pay for a bed and breakfast plus evening meal combination, although as the restaurant seems to close quite early, we are glad we didn't do that. Plus, there are so many restaurants and pubs nearby, there's really no need. If, however, you like to eat in at night rather than venturing out, the cost for the addition of the evening meal was inexpensive.

Facilities - Only a small hotel, facilities are limited, but The Savoy does have Wi-Fi in all the public areas, a small bar where you can get a drink or a snack, a restaurant overlooking the seafront, which is lovely, and a pool table. You can also get parking at a cheap rate -- only £3.00 a night, when we were there -- and, during peak-season, I'd guess it's a necessity.

We stayed two nights at The Savoy Hotel in Skegness and enjoyed everything about it. The staff is lovely, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the location is superb and the food is wonderful. We were so comfortable there in fact, we wished we could have stayed longer. A week relaxing at The Savoy would have been lovely.
