Review: Scotts Deluxe Spreader with EdgeGuard

Spring is rapidly approaching, and it is time to start thinking about that yard of yours. Here in the Central Florida area the grass is just beginning to wake up from its winter slumber. While the grass may remain dormant for a while longer, the weeds have already awoken and become the more prominent feature of my yard. It is time to make that first run of weed and feed before the grass and weeds begin their annual battle for the water and nutrients in the lawn. Without some help, the weeds usually win. I always dreaded having to spread weed and feed, fertilizer or insecticides on my lawn with my old lawn spreader.

My old lawn spreader, although it still had some service left in it, was in need of replacement. It was a budget model with a relatively small capacity. I made a trip to Lowe's as it was the closest such store to my home. I had no more than entered the store when I came across their display of Scotts spreaders. I really paid little attention to anything other than the size of the hopper. I did not want to make multiple trips back to the garage to refill the hopper as I did last year. The Scotts Deluxe Spreader with EdgeGuard had a large 30-liter capacity, big enough to hold an entire 35-pound bag of fertilizer. I was instantly sold. I paid the $49.47, plus tax, and headed home.

I was already pleased with my purchase, but it was not until I brought the Scotts spreader home that I realized what a neat machine it really was. A fold-down handle for easy storage was my first discovery. And what is this "edge guard" lever for? A brief look at the directions on the back of the spreader disclosed it all. What a cool idea! With the edge guard on, the Scotts spreader blocks the discharge on the right such that the fertilizer, or any other product, will be directed ahead on the right and not flung to the right side of the spreader. Now I could go right down along the sidewalk and driveway without slinging fertilizer all over the cement surfaces or onto flowerbeds where the weed killer component might damage flowers or other desirable foliage, and no need to go back later and sweep or wash the sidewalk or driveway off. What a time saving idea! At the time oft my spontaneous selection of the Scotts Deluxe Spreader with EdgeGuard, I had no idea that it was such a good choice.

The Edge Guard is only functional on the right side, so I made my first pass around the yard near the sidewalks, driveway and flowerbeds. With that done and the Edge Guard off, and the spreading width of 1.5 meters, that's almost 5-feet, the rest of the yard was completed in just a few quick passes. And best of all, no trips back to the garage to refill the hopper! The Scotts Deluxe Spreader with EdgeGuard was a great purchase.
