Review: Shin Chan Anime Series on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim

Faye Meadows
As more and more anime shows make their way to TV, the harder it is for anime fans to chose which shows to watch in their free time. Because of the numerous anime titles currently available, fans might accidentally overlook an anime gem on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim called "Shin Chan".

Centering around the lives of the Nohara family, the series basically follows the extremely hilarious situations and antics of a young boy named Shin and his family. Whether an episode involves "booty" dancing, playing with friends, or putting on a disguise of his favorite superhero, each adventure Shin embarks on is sure to crack up audiences. Largely comedy based, each episode of "Shin Chan" does contain somewhat of a story. Being a comedy show, however, you can't really expect much of an engaging story. After all, comedies are meant to make you laugh, right?

Even though the show mainly focuses on Shin, "Shin Chan" also contains many other unique and outrageous personalities. Take his parents, for example. His overstressed mother, Mitzy, is a stay at home mom who tends to most of the household duties. Unfortunately, she also seems to take the brunt of most of Shin's inappropriate comments and bizarre behavior as well. His father Hiro, on the other hand, is a womanizing businessman who behaves very similar to Shin. Because of this, Mitzy often scolds Hiro for his childish behavior. Shin also has a little sister named Hima who loves to run off and destroy people's belongings, especially items belonging to her mother. Although Hima does wreak havoc, Shin definitely takes the cake when it comes to causing the most chaos for his family and friends. This "Action Bastard" crazed kindergartner is the main character of "Shin Chan", hence the name, and displays some of the strangest behavior, such as dancing around with his butt out. Shin also seems to use a lot of inappropriate language, especially around his mom. Once such example is when Shin frequently comments on his mother's small breast size and her bad moods. Even though Shin is the main star, the show definitely would be less humorous without the supporting characters of Shin's kindergartner friends, his dog Whitey, and his neighbors. A great mixture of interesting characters truly brings out the overwhelming comical material in "Shin Chan".

Now for the animation. I have to admit, I found myself really turned off by the childish and simplistic design of "Shin Chan", also known as "Crayon Shin Chan" in Japan . When I first watched the show, I was puzzled by why the animation was so unappealing. After watching a few episodes, however, I realized that the characters were really the main focus. I soon found myself drawn into the series by the humor that I completely forgot about the unusual animation design. Fortunately, I gave the show another chance. If I hadn't, I really believe that I might have missed out on a wonderfully hilarious anime series.

Like the majority of comedy shows on Adult Swim, "Shin Chan" features a lot of humor largely aimed toward older teens. Because of this, some individuals might find themselves turned off by the show. However, if you don't mind obnoxious comments and some brief nudity, then you will probably find "Shin Chan" to be your cup of tea.

"Shin Chan" is an absolutely comedy filled anime series that contains a mixture of insane characters, weird animation, and extreme humor. This sometimes overlooked series is hilarious to watch, and I really believe many anime fans will enjoy the show. Next time you are bored and looking for something entertaining to watch, make sure to check out "Shin Chan" weeknights on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

Since last so many days, I have not seen Shinchan being aired on Hungama TV... Does anyone know what's happening? I am really missing my share of Shinchan entertainment... I am feeling like being deprived of my favorite entertainment... Can someone please tell me when I would be able to see Shinchan back?
