Review of Silk PureAlmond All Natural Almond Milk

J. K. Baurain
Silk PureAlmond almond milk has entered the grocery aisles recently with a marketing blitz. Since several members of my family, including myself, enjoy almond milk and consume it regularly, I decided to try Silk's version. I have tasted all of the locally available brands of almond milk. This broad experience as an almond milk drinker enabled me to easily compare Silk almond milk with other sweetened almond beverages. In this review I will consider Silk PureAlmond Original versus the two of the other major brands, Almond Breeze Original and Almond Dream.

Taste and Drinkability
For my first impression, I drank the almond milk straight from the glass. Silk PureAlmond is creamier and saltier than other almond milks. While I don't like almond milk to be thin and watery, Silk almond milk was a bit too thick and salty in my opinion. When added to sweetened breakfast cereal, Silk almond milk intensified the sweetness of each bite, which was not a plus for me.

Nutrition
Looking at the label explains more of why Silk almond milk tastes like it does. It has 10 more calories, 50 mg of additional sodium, and 2 more grams of sugar than Almond Dream. Silk PureAlmond has 60 calories, 150 grams of sodium and 7 grams of sugar, which are nearly identical statistics to Almond Breeze.

Ingredients
Despite being produced by a brand known for soy milk, Silk almond milk has no soy ingredients listed, advertising itself as being free of soy and lactose. Almond Breeze, on the other hand, contains soy lecithin. Silk almond milk contains added calcium carbonate, whereas other brands have tricalcium phosphate instead. According to the package, Silk PureAlmond "is made from almonds that were not genetically engineered."

The Final Verdict
I found the taste and thickness of Silk PureAlmond to be less appealing than other brands I typically buy. If a person likes almond milk to be very creamy and taste like salted almonds, Silk PureAlmond may be the way to go. However, one carton of Silk almond milk was enough for me to decide that I will return to buying our usual brands. Other almond milk brands have the lighter feel and flavor that my family and I have come to prefer.

Debbie, I would have to double check the labels of each brand for the current list of ingredients. Companies frequently seem to tinker with the formula in the name of "improved taste." I know that Almond Dream has changed its recipe since I wrote this comparative review.

I beg to differ your claim that the difference Almond Breeze having soy lchitin, where Silk pur almond has calcium carbonate. AB does NOT have soy lecitin in it! They list the same as SPAM, the calcium carbonate. I've never tried Silk. I was just curious being Silk is known for soy, I thought maybe the SPAM was part soy milk. So that is why I have not tried it yet. I would know if AB had soy in it as a lot of SOY stuff I have a reaction too. And I don't with AB! But since you claim that SPAM does not have soy in it, I may give it a try next time.

IMO-Silk Pure Almond is the best tasing of all possible choices. I like the fact that sea salt is in the product.

I have to respond to the comment above stating that carreegnan is a health hazard. THAT IS FALSE.

I am a chemist and carreegnan poses not health hazard to human beings. I am not sure where you get your 411; but, that is FALSE. You can validate this yourself by doing a simple websearch for carreegnan.

Carreegnan is simply a thickening agent derived fom red seweed.

Additionally, Silk Pure Almond contains at least 2 thickening agents derived from plant/vegetable sources. They are all benign and completely safe just as is carreegnan.

There is an old scientific quote: "It has been discovered that research causes cancer in rats." One should keep that in mind before making such absurd remarks.

Yes, but Silk PureAlmond does not use carrageenan which has health hazards. It is what Almond Breeze and ALL other Almond Milk brands use! Silk's is the only one without it so far...
