Review: Skull Kingdom in Orlando

Luminaria
In August of 2005 my son and husband at the time decided we would head to Orlando Florida to see Skull Kingdom as they are huge haunted and fright fans. Needless to say, I however am not. So we drove the distance from North Carolina to Orlando, got a hotel room, and saw some of the regular sight seeing that everyone who comes to Orlando does before heading over to Skull Kingdom.

We pulled up in front of this huge skull that covered the front of a castle; I was rather surprised to see that the outside of the building wasn't very well maintained. Paint was missing in many areas as well as chips in the brick of the castle. I had hoped the inside was in better condition then the outside seemed to be in. My husband and son were still happy to be there and hoped it got better as we went through it. Me, I would have rather gone back and sat in the car to read my book.

We walked into the lobby and were more so pleased by it then we were the outside. Inside was decorated with Gargoyles, Ghosts in corners, Goblins, Skeleton figures, giant spiders, basically what you'd expect in a haunted house.

So we started down the hallway and there were robotic figures through out the Castle as we walked through. As for the rest of the "fright theme", we might have seen maybe 6 actors trying their hardest to scare the pants off of us. It didn't work really since my husband and son laughed almost all the way through it while I relaxed greatly and began to laugh myself. I still would have rather been reading in the car. So we got through the castle which ends into a gift shop and a dinner theater.

We decided since we were already there that we might as well stay for the 6pm dinner show. Terrible is the only word I can say about the dinner theater. Luke warm pizza that tasted like the gas station type, alcohol, and sodas was what we were offered. As for the magic show we saw, I've seen 2n graders have more fun doing a show then that act did.

In October of 2006 Skull Kingdom closed down due to lack of business and the enormous amount of money it took to keep it a float. In 2007 it was demolished to become apartment housing for the area. Personally, I think they made the right choice. I'm sure at one time it was a grand place to visit, but as the years went by, they let it go as well.
