Review of the Spa at Mandarin Oriental, New York

Kai Bandele
The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, New York - nestled in the heart of Columbus Circle - redefines contemporary luxury with a heavy dose of understated elegance. The less-is-more motif prevalent in Oriental architecture meshed with NYC metropolis-sheik design serves to create the embodiment of an exquisite, if not spiritual, sanctuary.

Located in the Time Warner Center, a cool 35 stories above one of the city's most touristy neighborhoods, the Mandarin Spa delivers the perfect peaceful escape, without ever leaving the city. Almost every room boasts a spectacular city view of either Central Park or the Hudson River.

Spa goers are greeted with spa slippers on an orchid-decorated serving tray upon arrival. After checking in, first-timers are given a tour of the 14,500-square-foot-facility and encouraged to enjoy the "heat experience" rooms - complete with large stone Jacuzzi and amethyst steam room - to unwind before their spa services begin. Guests are encouraged to arrive at least a half hour prior to appointment time to enjoy this pre-session unwind. After the heat experience, guests are taken to a perfectly decorated waiting area to enjoy fresh fruit, berries and cool water with slices of citrus. A spa therapist soon appears to escort customer to a clean, spacious room where the session takes place.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, New York was one of only two spas in the country awarded the coveted five-star Mobil rating last year. An immaculately serene ambiance and exceptionally trained therapists were undoubtedly key factors in the rating decision. My therapist, Belka, was prepared to explain the significance of every spa practice and amenity you could imagine. From the gold leaf ceiling (yes, with traces of real gold) to the bamboo wood flooring and rice walls - even the motion of each massage stroke towards the heart to increase blood circulation - was patiently explained to me. Belka was also sure to ask the one question that spa connoisseurs always welcome..."Is the pressure okay?" And the pressure - like the overall Mandarin Oriental Spa experience - was picture perfect.

If you are looking for a full service spa that delivers the perfect peaceful escape above the hustle and bustle of the busiest street in New York City, do yourself a favor and retreat to The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
