So I patiently waited until it came to the states, ok my part of the states since it went to Texas first. So Thursday night with my Trekkie father who got me into the series as a small child and my trekkie husband stood in line at the 11:00 PM showing early to get some descent seats. We watched along with the other dozens of people waiting for it as well. Finally we got to sit down, after they made us change theaters because the projector broke. Then the trailers.
Once the trailers ended, and the familiar intros of the people who put it together, the Bad Robot group, the action started.
No, it didn't just start it was like we got to jump into the USS Kelvin and start the joy ride. Explosions, angry freaking Romulan with a plan, more explosions, heart to heart moments all the while everything kept moving until the heartbreak, birth of Jim Kirk and the escape of the Kelvin crew in a beautiful scene by a star.
Then the movie introduces itself as Star Trek before heading right back into scenes of young Kirk and Young Spock. Which move us right into their adulthood and Star Fleet with a stop off of meeting up with several crew members we know and love along with old faces like Captain Pike. (The first captain of the Enterprise and same in this universe as well.) The movie keeps us moving as the Romulans led by Nero look for their great enemy, Spock. (Nope not Kirk, he is just a great man in Earth History, they are after Spock.)
We have action, some surprises along the way which all lead to Kirk getting the Enterprise with Spock as is second to go save Earth. (Okay again but without whales.)
I was impressed. Not a little, woo that was a good movie but a Holy hell they are rebooting Star Trek and it works!! Thank goodness. It was very action packed for those who enjoy action, with drama of course which is a part of Star Trek. These I expected but then their was the light heartedness that I love from Star Trek, the humor. They had humor in the movie. So all in all it was a great movie- major two thumbs up from me. It worked for me as a Trekkie but also people that were their with their geeky friends also enjoyed the movie as well.
Of course no movie is perfect, so the downside was things like the massive flares of white light everywhere. (Seriously Abrams, that was a bit much.) Not enough time with some of the characters which one of my personal favorites of Scotty being played by Simon Pegg was not as large of a role but spot on for his roll. (Also great comic timing from him.) Nero was well Nero- Eric Bana did a great job but he was a bit rushed of a character but in a little over 2 hours things had to give. Not that I will not be looking for a directors cut once it is available to see what hit the floor.
But overall it was a great start to a new reboot of the series. They have already been signed on for another movie and the writers will hopefully start writing for it.
