Review: StarKist SeaSations Lemon & Herb Fish Fillets

StarKist SeaSations Lemon & Herb Fish Fillets Offers Great Flavor, Quality

Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez
I've been enjoying StarKist fish since I was a little boy eating tuna fish sandwiches. While I have grown into adulthood opening cans of StarKist tuna fish, I had never seen Charlie the StarKist mascot fish standing in my grocer's frozen section - until I saw him on a box of StarKist SeaSations Lemon & Herb Fish fillets. StarKist SeaSations Lemon & Herb Fish fillets come in cartons of 2 fillets for around $5.50.

Don't let the relatively high price for 2 frozen fish fillets dissuade you - this fish is high quality, white and flaky, and the fillets come individually wrapped in ready-to-heat microwavable steaming pouches.

Preparation

StarKist SeaSations Lemon & Herb Fish is packaged solely for microwave cooking. The process is quite easy. Simply place a fillet pouch on a microwave-safe plate, with the plastic pouch's printed side facing up. Begin cooking for about 3-1/2 to 4 minutes in a 1000-watt microwave or 5 to 5-1/2 minutes in an 800 watt microwave. Cooking times vary if cooking 2 or more fillets.

Don't poke any holes in the pouch!

Once the fillet has finished cooking, let it stand for about 2 minutes and then very carefully open the pouch. I can say from personal experience that some of the lemon & herb sauce in the pouch drips out of the steam pouch's vent holes when handling the pouch, so get ready for a few minor spills on the counter. Also, be careful not to let your hands or fingers get burned on the very hot fillet.

I find handling the pouch while cutting it open and slowly sliding or dropping the fish fillet onto a plate can actually be a bit challenging. The challenge, really, comes in keeping your fingers from getting burned through the plastic. Otherwise, removing the fish would be a piece of cake.

Flavor

The StarKist SeaSations Lemon & Herb Fish fillet is amazing. I am impressed by what StarKist is sticking into the frozen aisle. Their tuna is good, but I believe the StarKist SeaSations fish tastes better than the other frozen fish fillets I've had.

I think the StarKist frozen fish is better than others like it because the white, flaky, luscious fillets match or exceed anything I've seen in other boxes of frozen fish. The lemon & herb glaze delivers a robust and full flavor to the fish which I find particularly pleasing, but not overbearing. The flavor is light, but the zest of the lemon is pronounced. The herb flavor softens and brings dynamism to what I suspect would be an otherwise tart lemon sauce.

I purchased the Seastations Savory Lemon & Herb as the commercial made it look very delicious. However, after preparing it precisely as package indicated, I tasted it and didn't eat the rest. I was totally disappointed in the taste of this meal and wondered if there could have been something wrong with this particular package. I still have the remaining fillet and the best used date has not expired yet but I know I will not eat this based on my experience.
