Taste
The typical sandwich assembly all commences with choice of bread of which I usually select the Italian. The counter attendant then slaps on about ten or so slices of salami and pepperoni. The next item is choice of cheese of which I pick provolone. The rest of the sandwich gets run through the garden as I request a dose of lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, and black olives. The final add on is the vinegar, oil and herbs.
The sandwich has a surprisingly decent bite and the ingredients all taste pretty darn good with each bite. The banana peppers and pepperoni give the sandwich a quality "Italian sub" kick. This kick is occasionally enhanced when I opt for the pepper jack cheese instead of provolone. I usually divide the sandwich in half and eat the other half on day two for lunch as I am calorie counting. The other tasty option to ordering this sandwich is have it toasted before adding the toppings. The warm bread and melted cheese kick the sandwich up to a whole new level, though the remaining six inches saved for the next day gets kind of funky when it comes to re-heat it.
Nutritional Information
The total calorie count of the twelve inch Spicy Italian runs about 1040 calories and that is assuming it is ordered with vinegar and oil, no mayonnaise. I eat half of this in one meal so my calorie total is 520. I add a small back of veggie chips or sun chips to add an additional 140 calories and the lunch remains relatively low and keeps me full until the mid afternoon snack. The twelve inch subs contains about 92 grams of carbs and 56 grams of fat, but also remember to cut these numbers in half when eating only a six inch portion.
Price
The price of the twelve inch subway spicy Italian sub is a paltry five dollars. That equates to $2.50 per six inch when dividing my sandwich amongst two days of lunches. That price is tough to beat when comparing the purchase price to the cost of purchasing all these deli and salad ingredients at the store. Even better is the realized convenience of having the sandwich assembled by someone else. Based on the price along, I recommend the Subway Spicy Italian sub as a strong buy.
