Review: Sunbeam LED Light with Panic Alarm

Z. Perry
The Sunbeam LED Light with Panic Alarm is a compact device which boasts a bright single-LED flashlight, a loud 110db siren, and a metal key chain/ring. This Sunbeam product runs on three small AG13 batteries.

The red, oval-shaped unit measures just over 2.5" long, not including the chain. The LED light's button is slightly recessed to prevent it from turning on by accident. Pulling out the key chain activates the Sunbeam's panic alarm (plugging it back in turns the alarm off).

The siren sounds very loudly and has a fluctuating frequency that makes it especially attention-getting. It's easy to trigger with little notice. In addition to attracting emergency help, the panic alarm might scare off a threatening dog.

The LED light produces a fairly bright beam for a unit of its size. The light only stays on as long as the button remains pushed down. It's good for tasks like finding a key hole or illuminating a closet, but I wouldn't want to walk a mile in the dark with it.

The only noteworthy problems pertain to batteries. The unit used for testing came with dead batteries and wouldn't turn on. However, the LED light and alarm both worked fine after I replaced the batteries. The battery compartment cover proves a bit difficult to close.

This Sunbeam product is available at some dollar stores, such as Dollar Tree. I paid one dollar plus tax for it. Several online retailers also sell this unit. eBay.com is a good source of replacement AG13 batteries (also known as LR44).

The Sunbeam LED Light with Panic Alarm contains mercury and people shouldn't dispose of it in regular trash, according to the package. A one year manufacturer's limited warranty applies to this product; customers may return it with the receipt for a refund.

The package also indicates that customers can call 1-877-383-6399 for help from the manufacturer regarding this product. Sunbeam support is available after 8:30 AM and before 5:30 PM Eastern time.
